I read The Name of the Wind quite a few years ago now, and it took me a few pages to get back into this story. Bast is without a doubt one of my favourite characters from the original books, and it was a real pleasure to learn a little more about him. I hadn’t read the short story The Lightning Tree, so I can’t say if it’s a good extension of it or not, but the whimsical vibes were perfect.
That said, this book really suffers from lack of plot. It reminded me a lot of old children’s classics where we follow the adventures of the main characters without any purpose. This type of story gets really boring really fast, and The Narrow Road Between Desires is no exception to the rule despite being short. Nate Taylor’s illustrations were a nice addition to the story and added greatly to the atmosphere.
Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Bast was by far my least favorite character in The Kingkiller Chronicles, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this novella.
It was enjoyable to get a bigger glimpse into the world of the interludes & see what life was like in the town surrounding the Waystone Inn.
I don’t have much to say on the matter. The prose contained its typical beauty, the banter was humorous, & there were some heartstrings being played by the end.
I can now impatiently await book three with everyone else!

His standalone aren't anywhere close to the main books. Hope he just finally finished the third book already
It’s been a couple years since I last read anything from this series (and I never read the Lightning Tree). After listening to this in about 6 hours, I feel delightfully reconnected with the KKC world, and ready to ask so many more questions about… everything? Bast is a fascinating character and this provides fantastic context for him. I’m ready for a reread now.

Of the two Kingkiller novellas, I liked the one about Auri better, but this was good. This was a bit less abstract, but it was in keeping with what I remember about Bast from the first two books. I did like the concept for the illustrations, but much prefer the drawing style of the ones in SRoST.
