This book just felt like it was in a rush. The character development was fairly flat, and sparse in some regards. Nothing felt thoroughly examined. I always felt like I was missing something, partially due to the fact that the author used multiple POVs, but all third person, which was a bit disorienting, but then the chapters/segments were so short that you never really got to know any of the characters.

And to top it all off, the mystery was not very good and the twist was so-so. There wasn't a good balance of the folk magic versus detective stuff, so both aspects felt flat to me. I really wanted to like this book; I loved the Savannah witches series so I was eager to return to literary Savannah, but Frasier's glimpses were fleeting and unsatisfactory. I'd been tempted to buy these as an Amazon Kindle deal, but now I'm glad I read it on unlimited instead.

I stepped out of my comfort zone with this book and I wasn't disappointed! It was just the right amount of creepy for me and I really enjoyed the mystical aspect of it! I loved the multiple point of views and the twist towards the end really threw me off!

Elise Sandburg book 1

I had the audiobook performed by Natalie Ross who does a great job with the narration

Homicide detective Elise Sandburg is familiar with Savannah’s dark side, she is cloaked in it. You get a real feel of the swamplands, mystic voodoo and magic. Strata Luna is very convincing as a dark arts practitioner, the narrator made her sound really effective, and became the most fascinating character in the book, overshadowing Elise.

Elise’s back story is very intriguing, her partner David’s Gould’s is more conventional but sad. I found them likeable enough, but I didn’t engage  as much as I did with the Jude Fontaine main characters.

The theme of poisoning people to mimic death is unique and fascinating, and feels totally plausible. I loved the way that it all came together. It’s basically one main thread with associated bits interwoven.
This author deserves far more attention as the quality of writing is excellent. The pace and interest levels are high throughout.

This is another great book which I highly recommend especially the audiobook version as the narration is excellent.

A great and easy read. I loved how the chapters were broken up into different perspectives. I will definitely be continuing this series.

For some reason at first this book bored me. Perhaps this was just my mindset in the moment because I was soon wrapped up in the mystery, the characters, and uncovering history.

So this book was weird and slow and the case was a bit obvious but I still really liked it and will be reading the rest of the series
