The book opens with Anne's joyous marriage to Gilbert in a backyard ceremony at Green Gables; the same day, they travel to their new town, where Gilbert has gotten a doctoring job: Four Winds Harbor, a seafaring town sixty miles away* - far enough in those days of horse-drawn travel to make a clean break with their former lives, reconciling themselves to only see Avonlea folks a couple of times a year. The only home they can find is out of the way, near the lighthouse, but Anne immediately falls in love with her new "house of dreams" as she and Gilbert settle in and make the home and gardens their own. Anne and Gilbert join the small, tight-knit family of other "over-harbor" residents: grizzled, gentle lighthouse keeper Captain Jim; industrious misandrist Cornelia Bryant; and the tragic, proud, honorable Leslie Moore, who becomes Anne's new and dear bosom friend.
* For reference, PEI is about 140 miles in length, and the Green Gables House site stands about halfway across the island on the north shore. Given the seafaring nature of the town, Four Winds must be on the ocean side, not the strait side; but Elmira (the actual easternmost town) is too far away (about 80 miles). So I picture Four Winds Harbor as being around where Murray River is, on the southeast tip. Someone correct me if there is another site more commonly accepted.
This turned out to be my second-favorite Anne book after [b:Anne of Green Gables|8127|Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1)|L.M. Montgomery|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1390789015s/8127.jpg|3464264]. The new setting has a romantic flavor of seafaring and adventure, loneliness and mystery. The neighbors are lovable to a one, and the length of the book gives them time to breathe and develop and become fixtures in Anne's life, that is very welcome after the hasty introduce-em-and-drop-em style in [b:Anne of Windy Poplars|65840|Anne of Windy Poplars (Anne of Green Gables, #4)|L.M. Montgomery|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1348613064s/65840.jpg|2946564]. Here again, LMM has managed to create unique characters that I truly loved, and it's a testament to those characters that they felt like such natural and important parts of Anne's life in spite of my natural allegiance to the original "Green Gables" characters. I loved that all the over-harbor folks already clearly had deep, strong relationships with each other, and with the various former residents of the House of Dreams. It felt like Anne and Gilbert were coming to a real, lived-in neighborhood that had existed before them and would go on after them.
This is the darkest book so far, and I think that's part of what really worked for me. Leslie's backstory is unrelentingly sad, and Jim has some tragedy in his past as well, although the storyline that made me actually cry was Anne's. "Green Gables" basically earned a book's worth of lightness and sweetness and joy on the strength of Anne's sad backstory, and the other books have seemed a little overly upbeat and sappy since then, with nothing of any real emotional weight happening in any of them. "House of Dreams" still represents overall an optimistic, joyous view of life; but by mixing the overwhelming, soaring moments of joy with real pain and grief, the highs feel more earned. Even when over-the-top soap opera twists and/or highly sentimental speeches are happening, they have a sense of groundedness and emotional authenticity.

It was rather boring during the first half, since it mainly focused on introducing all the new characters, but it did pick up in the latter half. None of them was as loveable as the original cast.
My biggest problem is the same as many others, which is that I don't like the domestic Anne. I know it was very natural back then, that women gave up their ambitions for the sake of becoming a mother and house wife, but considering L.M. Montgomery managed to be a wife/mother and an author at the same time, I don't understand Montgomery's choice. It felt like such a betrayal to have Anne rejecting the idea of writing her neighbour's biography and instead find someone else to do it. Even though Gilbert encouraged her to do it, she argued against it because she basically only knew how to write silly little stories for kids. That is not the Anne I know and love!

God, there was so much happening!
So many fascinating characters and storylines! I'm baffeled!
Just by the sheer amount of story and enjoyness I had for this book, this is my favourite of the series so far.
Leslies Story alone would've been enough for this book, but no, there needed to be more^^

Surprisingly gutting, definitely better than Anne of Windy Poplars/Willows. Charming. Probably my favourite after 1 and 2. Some of it makes your eyes roll but there were a lot of laugh out loud parts and a couple of tears shed.
