I still love Anne, but the stories are getting a tad repetitive. There will inevitably be some tragically sad person nearby Anne and by the end of the book through Anne's plucky good spirit, everyone will walk away happy.
i dont think i will keep reading the series, after windy poplars this was a huge let down. maybe i just dont like married anne and gilbert.
29/03/09: I was sure that I read this book as a child but rereading it now I don't recognise anything!
However, I have so far found several wonderful quotes.
"We came to the comforting conclusion that the Creator probably knew how to run His universe quite as well as we do, and that, after all, there are no such things as 'wasted' lives, saving and except when am individual wilfully squanders and wastes his own life..." (Gilbert, page 114)
"He makes up the most remarkable yarns - and then his mother shuts him up in the closet for telling stories. And he sits down and makes up another one, and has it ready to relate to her when she lets him out. He had one for me when he came down tonight. 'Uncle Jim,' says he, solemn as a tombstone, 'I had a 'venture in the Glen today.' 'Yes, what was it?' says I, expecting something quite startling, but no-wise prepared for what I really got. 'I met a wolf in th street,' says he, 'a 'normous wolf with a big red mouf and awful long teeth, Uncle Jim.' 'I didn't know there was any wolves at the Glen,' says I. 'Oh, he comed there from far, far away,' says Joe, 'and I fought he was going to eat me up, Uncle Jim.' 'Were you scared?' says I. 'No, 'cause I had a gun,' says Joe, 'and I shot the wolf dead, Uncle Jim - solid dead - and then he went up to heaven and bit God,' says he.'" (Captain Jim, pages 128 - 129)
"Heretics are wicked, but they're mighty int'resting. It's jest that they've got sorter lost looking for God, being under the impression that He's hard to find - which He ain't never." (Captain Jim, page 145)
01/04/09: Okay, I don't think I actually read this as a child so it's going on my 2009 shelf. Have some more quotes to add later.
Overall, I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous four but it was still a great addition to the series. It read more like a novel, whereas the previous books read like collections of stories with a vague plot running through them. All of the new characters in this book were wonderful, and I wonder who we're going to meet in the sixth book! 8/10

Pros:
-There is such a change in the plot threads and characters from the other books that this one stands apart from them.
-There's more maturity in the story.
Cons:
-While it is more interesting it's so different from the preceding books that it doesn't feel like part of Anne of Green Gables at all.
-Politics is viewed as part of legacy rather than individual beliefs, and is a detriment to Anne's character.
-The plot twist regarding Leslie and her marriage had me laughing rather than rejoicing, it was so silly.

SECOND READ (SEPT 2020)
I absolutely loved revisiting this story. The first time I read it I missed Avonlea, but I didn’t as much this time. I was loving spending time with Anne and Gilbert and all the other wonderful characters in Four winds!
Captain Jim, Miss Bryant and Leslie are such delightful characters. I loved all the scenes with them and Captain Jim is a particular favourite of mine. His life book is so special and so many scenes with him brought me too tears.
This one has some darker and more challenging scenes which gave substance to the story and showed the maturity of Anne and the other characters. I loved this book so much and am so glad I revisited it!
FIRST READ (MARCH 2019)
Another wonderful Anne story!
I loved the quirky and lovely characters that we met in this story, particularly Leslie and Captain Jim.
My only slight downside was that I missed Avonlea and all the characters from there.
This book was darker than the others and really shows Anne growing up into a strong young woman.
The ending made me cry (again), and I’m excited to read the next one to see what happens next in Anne’s and Gilbert’s lives.

'Anne was always romantic, you know,' said Marilla apologetically.
'Well, married life will most likely cure her of that,' Mrs Rachel responded comfortingly.
.
There really isn't enough Mrs Rachel in Anne's House of Dreams!
.
Anne and Gilbert finally get married and move to Four Winds Harbour where Gilbert is to be the new doctor. If Green Gables lacked anything it was the seaside and an adorable old lighthouse keeper!
.
This book is a lot more melancholy than any of the others and while there is, as always, a happy ending it's a bittersweet one.

3.5/ druga połowa zdecydowanie lepsza niż pierwsza :) Stwierdzam, że jednak jestem większą fanką historii „z młodości Ani” bo dalsze części nie podobają mi się aż tak jak początkowe.
I have read this countless times. First read in January 1985 after reading Anne of Green Gables over Christmas break of 1984.
