The pacing was quite slow for me at times but the story was really poignant: about growing up, the responsibility of a young adult taking care of an older, sick parent while trying to navigate work and dating and life. Themes of grief, depression, and making sense of identity as a POC in a white dominant culture.

A good debut by Jessica George. It hit all the emotions. Made you want to laugh. Made you want to cry. Made you want to cheer on Maame (Maddie). Made you angry with her mom and brother. It was quite the emotional journey.

I’m mostly unwell after finishing this. Very Chewing Gum/Fleabagesque. I need the BBC show now.

Beautiful writing and I really related to Maddie. She was a very quirky character but felt very real.
Deservedly buzzy, I think, especially for a debut. Didn't know it would hit so close to home with a main premise being the loss of the protagonist's father. But I appreciated her very real feelings of regret, anger and despair in the face of this loss. It was Jessica's acknowledgments at the end that definitely made me cry. I think there's a lot of sweetness in this book.
