I started this book months ago and then, after 170 pages, set it aside, not because it wasn't good, but because I had a very specific itch and the book wasn't scratching it as I'd hoped. I finished it tonight and enjoyed it immensely. A fun story of family, superpowers, cons, and faith.
Each character had his or her own fears, desires, strengths, and failings. Books with multiple narrators can often sound like one person in different hats, but in this each character's own personhood shown through. You'd never mistake Frankie's narration for Teddy's, etc.
The story holds together well. Everything isn't resolved by the end, but each character has surer footing and hope for the future--though each is also just as likely to fall prey to their own weaknesses again and have it all fall apart.
Nothing shattering here, but definitely fun.

This was one of those surprising gems that I found while pursuing the "available now" lists on my local library's online offerings.
Part family "dramedy," part sci-fi, part mob story, part love story, this tells the story of an fairly dysfunctional family with some amazing gifts, and how they use them to save the world.

A great, creative read! Even though it falls into the "a family of a bunch of a-holes and their interconnected lives" genre that's been overplayed lately, I thought the element of psychic-ness made this feel fresh. The time-jumping was well woven. And I was especially impressed with the vivid characters and the thoughtfulness about how a person would really be affected by the ability to, say, know whether or not any person was lying to her. Highly recommended!
This was much more of a contemporary book than I was expecting, and as such very different from what I usually read. But what a great read! I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was funny and moving and the characters were brilliant. Loved the switching POVs, my favorites were Buddy and Irene. I’m very glad I happened to come across this book.
what a delightful read!! i love when there are a lot of different storylines and they all tie together perfectly :)
Rather charming. Had a "Royal Tenenbaums" kind of feel to it.
I'm not sure why I initially thought this was a YA novel-- maybe because Matty, who's a teenager, was the first character whose perspective was introduced (or at least I think it was his perspective)? Maybe it was the quirky, fun concept? I don't know, but regardless, this is decidedly *not* a YA novel. It's got moments of humor, but it's more about family breakdown and trying to muddle through difficult situations and people who love each other trying to do right by one another when it counts. The blurb likening this to Chabon was apt, although this one has a more satisfying ending than most of Chabon's books!
Enjoyable and human, with believable, likable characters. I feel like there aren't as many books about psychics as there were when I was younger, so there's a bit of nostalgia here as well.
I loved it. The family felt real in such a warm way, I didn’t want it to end!
I really liked the audiobook of this. The narrator was great and kept me engaged in the story. I thought it was interesting and I definitely wanted to know what was going to happen.
