I usually feel dumb reading these books ( in a good way ) but it felt less good this time.

An entertaining read for Halloween but this late Christie is a long way from her best. An ageing Poirot was poignant.

This is one of Christie's later novels. Poirot is getting older but he's lost none of his deductive powers or his style. 'You are sartorially ambitious' says one of the characters to him and goes on to mention 'your superb moustache' to which Poirot responds "I am gratified that you have noticed it.". Yes, Poirot is as much of a preening peacock as ever and insists on wearing unsuitable shoes for the countryside but would we want him any other way?

This mystery is a little different in that a child is the victim. Joyce boasts of having seen a murder while the preparations for a big party are going on only to be found dead during the party itself. Hallowe'en just got real scary!

There's the usual cast of suspects and red herrings and it's all the more complicated with trying to work out whether Joyce really did see a murder and whether a previous crime needs to be solved to find Joyce's killer.

If anything, it all becomes too complicated as there are several possible previous crimes and too many people questioned by Poirot speculate about a lunatic entering the house and killing the girl which is highly irrelevant but so many characters think of it that I was left wondering what mental health crisis was going on at the time this was written?

A little too many unnecessary tangents to make it a favourite but it's still a good yarn and a puzzler trying to unravel the answer before Poirot.

This is the first Agatha Christie book I’ve read, which I picked up for the name given it’s the Halloween season, and it did not disappoint. I like the murder mystery genre, though typically avoid reading anything too scary, and what is great about Christie is you get just the right amount of danger and intrigue without real fear or threat. The story unfolds so beautifully, and though I’ll be admittedly arrogant enough to say I figured out who the killer was before the text got there, but having never read Christie before, IDK if the killer is typically figured out by most before the end? I don’t want that to be true, since I like that I figured it out but also because her books are so widely (the most widely) read around the world that it’s nice to think I solved the puzzle faster than most. Though I did not figure all the connections, especially concerning the Butler’s, but still. It’s definitely an entertaining, fast read, and if you’re a fan of the genre, definitely worth picking up.
