Seguire Zenone lungo la sua vita è seguire l'uomo rinascimentale nel percorso che lo conduce dalla superstizione verso la scienza, verso la sperimentazione, verso la nascita di un uomo nuovo che ha una nuova visione del mondo. Come tutte le nascite, anche questa passa attraverso il dolore, in un travaglio che porta dal buio alla luce. Zenone, personaggio immaginario, è un uomo ed è l'umanità: in lui sono i tratti dei tanti personaggi realmente esistiti che hanno aperto gli occhi e la mente e il cuore al mondo e alle idee nuove che lo percorrevano, creando a loro volta nuove strade da seguire dove prima stagnava la palude della superstizione e dell'ortodossia.
Splendido romanzo storico che, attraverso il suo protagonista, ci introduce in tutti gli aspetti di quell'incredibile secolo nel quale in ogni ambito si è respirato il sentore di un potentissimo fermento : l'arte, la religione, la scienza, la filosofia, niente sembrava poter resistere a questa fortissima spinta verso il cambiamento che percorse tutta l'Europa nel XVI secolo.
Ed è proprio questo movimento "globale" che l'autrice riesce a racchiudere nel protagonista del romanzo e nella sua vita errabonda: filosofo, alchimista, scienziato, sempre pronto a cercare, a sperimentare, a mettere in discussione ogni cosa e in ogni ambito, che sia pensiero, dogma, teoria o sistema. Zenone è l'uomo nuovo, colui che apre la strada, nel bene e nel male, all'uomo del futuro. Grande romanzo, assolutamente imperdibile.

Leggere L’opera al nero per me è stato come guardare il cielo di notte e riconoscere solo qualche costellazione.

Ci sono dei passi che Yourcenar scrive, però, che sono senza pari, e lì non puoi fare altro che prendere nota in qualche modo per leggere e rileggere.

Gli stava dinnanzi, piccola fonte insipida e pura; non l’amava; quella fanciulla ingenua era certamente il più lieve dei legami che lo congiungevano al suo breve passato, ma provò per lei una vaga compassione e l’orgoglio d’esser rimpianto. Ad un tratto, col gesto impetuoso di colui che sul punto di partire, dona, getta o consacra qualcosa per conciliarsi non si sa quali poteri o per liberarsene, si sfilò la fedina d’argento vinta alla corsa degli anelli con Giannetta Fauconnier e la depose come un soldo in quella mano tesa. Non pensava affatto di ritornare. Da lui quella giovinetta avrebbe avuto solo l’elemosina d’un breve sogno.

I found this book to be a tough slog, perhaps because I read it over a few months when I couldn't concentrate much on reading. The story itself is thin, so the book depends on the ruminations of the character and/or the author. Fortunately, this is marvellous. The thoughts, observations, asides, ponderings, etc. are interesting and thought-provoking.

Je suis heureux d'avoir lu ce roman, qui me restera en tête. Malgré (ou justement grâce à ?) un style trop recherché et sophistiqué pour moi, qui brouille le sens de certains passages, l'atmosphère est saisissante. Il est facile d'être séduit et fasciné par le personnage principal. J'ai été très convaincu, mais le style ne me parle pas vraiment personnellement, et m'empêche d'aller plus loin dans l'appréciation de l'oeuvre.

Belíssimo livro.

Remarkably immersive. The research which went into it is unconsciously evident, and the author’s post-script demonstrates how much work she put in, with regards to research. I rarely read ‘historical fiction’, and indeed, that isn’t what attracted me to this book. The premise sounded interesting, and it did not disappoint. The language had me transfixed, and every time I opened the book I was immediately transported to another world.
