This was a good addition to the series, and I'll keep reading for sure. We got more Ciri finally, and she's starting to come into her own, though I didn't love that her sections were sometimes past tense and sometimes present. I feel like the motivations of side characters weren't always clear. It would've been nice to feel present more for action rather than having everything relayed after the fact or being in a perennial chase sequence.

This whole book is basically a long chase sequence. We follow the three different parts of the company: Geralt and his troop, Triss Merigold and Yennifer Vengerberg. As they all try to catch up with Ciri, in order to protect her from her many persuers. But we also hear from Ciri's own mouth about her journey. It sounds like a book you could skip, but it's in this book that all characters resolve themselves with their fate: Ciri, Geralt and Yennifer all have to decide what they are willing to sacrifice for their loved ones and how they want to live their lives: lead by revenge or fighting for what's right. And who decides what is 'right'?
Kudos to the narrator who does a great job with such a long list of characters and accents.

We’re getting to the point where the series is established and therefore the editing falls apart. The plot is all over the place - a band of brothers forms, Ciri may or may not be a lesbian but isn’t in this one much, and there’s a lot of politics amongst people you don’t necessarily care very much about. For no real reason, the sorceresses form a league of no particular use, and it’s really hard to remember which side is which in the war, or why the war is really happening. None of the female characters are sympathetic but there’s a very bizarre obsession with what everyone is wearing, and can we stop with the endless dudes who want to sexually assault everyone? I mean, it’s a grim and perilous works etc but I promise you, not every man there wants to immediately violate every woman he sees. There are dwarves with incomprehensible names. Everyone works out that the fake Ciri is… fake, through some unbelievably convoluted explanations of genetic manipulation- demonstrating yet again that the works of the Witcher has a really odd relationship with science (you know what lactic acid is, but not how to sterilise a wound… and so on). Plodding.
Upon starting the Witcher series, I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of characters and places that were being described but I am now thoroughly enjoying how everything is coming together!
The last few chapters of this book were so good, and the ending is a great cliff hanger that has me wanting to grab the next book off my shelf!
Again, as always, I want a map
