Aside from the occasional Neil Gaiman, I'm not a huge fan of fantasy novels. I do like circuses though, so I suppose that's why this one lingered on my TBR shelf for years. The imagery was beautiful, and I would definitely watch if this was made into a film... I just didn't care much about what happened to the people within the circus. I thought the story moved slow, and the competition between Celia and Marco (had to Google the names because I didn't remember) was nowhere as fierce and fiery as I'd imagined/hoped. I'm admittedly a book masochist, happy endings rarely impress me, and I wanted to see something dark and deceitful. I think that the flaws I found in this book were merely matters of personal taste... I wasn't captivated by it, but didn't hate it. Solid three stars.

This is the kind of fantasy and magic I love. Beautifully written and not entirely outlandish. So happy this book came across my lap and I can't wait to read the others.

I really enjoyed every time I got to pick up this book. I was immersed in the circus and wanted to see what else would be created. I thought all the characters were well done and added so much to the story. Initially I was unsure about the Bailey side plot but I got invested, just like everything else I read. I wasn't sure this style would be for me, and it was a bit of an adjustment but I loved this book

I have shockingly little to say about this, which is kind of a bad sign, I suppose.
By the end of the novel, I guess I just didn't care that much about it all. About the romance between the leads or even the continuation of the story in the hands of others.
The novel does a lot of things well, but it somehow manages to never make us care that much about what's happening. And part of it, for me, is maybe that it's hard for me to care about a man who is psychologically abusing an elderly man in order to steal his life's work from him so that he can be with a woman he's loved from afar for years.
Anyrate, the stakes just never seemed to be there. And even when the stakes were laid out clearly, I didn't really care that much about the characters.
I don't know. It's not a bad book but it's also not a good one.
