I really enjoyed this story. There were a few points that fell flat for me but I do hope that I get some answers in the second book. As an introduction to the world I thought the first half of the book was a little slower paced then I’m used to. I did like the FMCs drive to protect the ones she loves.

This is the first book I've read in awhile that completely captivated me and that I could not put down
3.5-4 ✨
“Don’t survive for anyone else. Survive for yourself. Survive because the thought of not surviving, the thought of letting those who would hurt you win, is so repulsive, you can’t stand it. Survive because you deserve to survive.”
At first, I really wanted to give up on this book. The first half felt confusing — I couldn’t see the plot, and I had no idea what was actually happening.
But then… I completely fell in love with Lorian and Prisca’s growing relationship. Their connection was charming, sweet, funny — full of that perfect enemies-to-lovers tension.
I also really liked the cadre. Watching them help Prisca grow stronger, teaching her to harness her power, and seeing them slowly warm up to her was one of my favorite parts of the story.
“One day soon, you will have to make a choice. Be a torch for just one soul in the dark…or burn like the sun for all of them.”
There are still so many secrets out there, and I honestly can’t wait to uncover them.
As for the Friend? I just had a bad feeling about her — something deep down told me not to trust her.
And the Queen… is it just me, or does something feel seriously wrong and weird about her?

This took me a while to get into it, the start of the plot and world building comes at you thick and fast. Once I was over the 30% mark I was hooked!!
Loved that the plot was the main focus - I’m excited to see where this series goes.
I adore the romance plot too, I just pray I don’t have to endure the FMC playing on the whole ‘I can’t trust him’ aspect for an age.
