This too me a longer time to read , but I did enjoyed it. For me it is hard to explain why I did I just felt that what was being explained makes sense. I might change this review later when I can put how if feel into words.

Okay, I understand that is not the kind of reaction Sun Tzu would have liked(best victories are won without fighting) but it makes a nice heading. His philosophy is simple - be good even if it means looking bad and to know your surroundings while you fight. He is against pretentious heroism, plunder or useless bloodshed whether that is blood of his own men or his opponents. Yet he wants you not to miss the opportunities where you can find them or to break the old moral laws where it is of advantage to you.
Not that I'm looking to lead an army or pretend that I can but there is something so honest in there that you just love it. Perhaps it is book's realism (as against the bookish morality) - something comparable to Machiavelli's 'The Prince'.

نص ماتع، ويُنبئ عن عقلية عجيبة في سبر أغوار النفس العسكرية في القيادة والجندية، ونظرٍ من علٍ للمعترك بشتى أشكاله وظروفه، وتنبيهٍ على تفاصيل أصلية وطارئة في الحرب لا يحسنها إلا مَن تمرَّس في فنونها وأجج ضرامها، مع نزعةٍ إنسانية (قد يكون دافعها سياسي/عسكري) واضحة.
وأن يبقى نص وضعي كُتب قبل ٢٥٠٠ عام حيوياً ويعاد النظر في قواعده وأصوله وفروعه، ويستخرج ما يناسب ظروفاً تتجدد؛ لهو نصٌّ فذٌّ بحق!
ومقدمة إلياس حنا نفيسة أغنَت النص، وأبانَت عن عبقريته، ومما جاء فيها (ص ٧-٤٠)، بتصرف:
«إنَّ الأحداث التاريخية مجرد زبدٍ على موجات التاريخ. [فـ]ـيمكن اعتبار الحروب والثورات كأنها زبد على موجات التاريخ التي تسيطر عليها الطبيعة البشرية، الأمر الذي يجعلنا نشعر أنَّ عقلنا الوراثي الذي نحمله هو في حضرة مسرحية بانورامية بأبعاد لا تُحصى. ينظر إلى التحولات من فوق، من الصورة الكبرى، لكنه ثابت بسبب موروثاته التراكمية. في «فن الحرب» ارتقى سون تزو إلى مستوى الثبات في الطبيعة البشرية، ومن هنا الإيجاز في الكتاب ومن هنا ديمومته. قد يكون سبب ديمومة كتاب كلاوزفيتز «عن الحرب» أيضاً كما كتاب سون تزو: ارتقاء كلاوزفيتز من معالجة شؤون الحرب والسياسة إلى مستوى ثبات الطبيعة البشرية.
التدريب على القيادة للرتب الأدنى يجب أن يكون متقدماً وذا مستوى عال، ليصير قادراً على اتخاذ القرار فوراً ودون الرجوع إلى مَن هو أعلى منه رتبة. من هنا، أتت تسمية «العريف الاستراتيجي - strategical corporal».
يظهر التناقض الكبير بين سون تزو وكلاوزفيتز في كيفية ربح الحرب. يقول الأول إنَّ أفضل طريقة لربح الحرب: مهاجمة استراتيجية العدو بدلاً من مهاجمته مباشرة لأنها أقل كلفة. وهذا أمر ليس ببسيط أبداً.
يقول بعضهم: «الاستراتيجية وهم»، والمقصود أنَّ الاستراتيجية عملية فكرية، تخطط للتفاعل والتعامل مع واقع في المستقبل. بكلام آخَر: إننا نُخطط اليوم أي الحاضر لفعل سيقع في المستقبل، معتمدين على ما نعرفه اليوم، مع توقع التحولات الممكنة في المستقبل. إذن، كل شيء يبدو افتراضياً. هنا يأتي دور القائد المتنوِّر الذي يستعمل وصفة سون تزو التي ترتكز على الكثير من العوامل، وأهمها: الخداع والحسابات الدقيقة والمزج بين الدفاع والهجوم في الوقت نفسه.
يقول ليدل هارت [من رؤوس الاستراتيجيا] أنَّ سون تزو أهم مفكر عسكري في التاريخ، ولا يُقارَن بمَن كتب بعدَه إلا مع كلاوزفيتز الذي كتب بعده بألفي عام. لكن الفرق بين الاثنين أنَّ سون تزو ذا رؤية أوضح وتبصرٍ أعمق وعذوبةٍ أبدية.
يركز سون تزو على الاستعلام والخداع كثيراً، وذلك على عكس كلازوزفيتز الذي لا يكار يخصص صفحة واحدة للاستعلام والتجسس في عن الحرب.
يرى كلاوزفيتز أنَّ غالبية تقارير الاستعلام والتجسس متناقضةً مع بعضها، بل إنها خطأ».

Pretty underwhelming for a classic. I just read The Art of War and not the context about when it was written or about Sun Tzu that other translations seem to include. The context might have been interesting, but the classic was nothing but a quick read.

Surprisingly this book captivated far more than most fantasy novels that I read(I prefer fantasy over all else). The lessons within are invaluable and simplified for those who are not quite bright. The author is sarcastic and witty which made reading this very entertaining. Definitely recommend.
