This was such a magical & fun book for kids. I should really read more middle grade it brings back so many good memories.

I loved the illustrations at the bedginning of each chapter. They added so much more to the story. I think my favorite part of this book was the recipes at the end. Very unexpected and I now need to make some bisquets.
If only we all could be wizards and witches. *happiness*

The Magic Thief is the story of a boy who does everything right, pretty much the first time. He is placed in the story so that everyone can learn from him. He is annoying to others (obviously), but he is right so often as to probably be always right.

I didn't like the book (as is also obvious), but my boy did. I assume that this is because it fulfills the childhood fantasy of being right all the time when the grown-ups aren't. I just didn't believe the viewpoint character was ever really in danger. So, no tension, just silly little set pieces. I think that the book would have been better told from the viewpoint of the new master trying to figure out who this blessed child is, rather than from the viewpoint of the child who does no wrong (even when they do).

3 3/4 stars? I enjoyed this a lot. There were some logic flaws that bugged me a little because they wouldn't have been hard to weave into the woodwork, but it is nice to read a believable smart but totally uneducated hero's voice. I was really kind of annoyed that the female characters, though in positions of authority, didn't get to DO much at all. Only the boys got to have adventures. That sucks. But Rowan sounds like she could be fun.

Disability tag for Nevery's use of a cane. That also irked me, as people who need a cane cannot be expected to out-*run* their pursuers. /experience

Super quirky read. Its like the socially awkward sibling of books like the Alchemyst.

Nice to read a book where the main character has a really good moral character. Enjoyed these books!

Conn is a thief and he wants to be the apprentice not the servant to Nevery after he successfully pickpockets his locus magicalicus (magic stone). Nevery reluctantly agrees and Conn begins his tasks, school and finding his own magic stone. Great characters, setting and plot; I read it in one sitting even though I knew that this was only the first in a trilogy. Easy read - great for fourth and fifth grade fantasy fans.
