excellent storytelling and picture paining of the easy west. i related strongly to Alexandra, as a fellow oldest daughter. willa cather captured the feeling of belonging to the land and perseverance through hard times because you can see better things coming.

A book beautiful in its stolid practicality (a reflection of its main character).

O Pioneers! helped me to learn again my way of reading. After years of skimming through academic texts, and scanning sometimes overly-indulgent contemporary fiction prose for meaning, this novel reminded me how to read slowly, and relish it.

There is a lot of nature in this little book. Willa Cather offers the landscape, wildlife, flowers and insects alongside the story of Alexandra Bergson, a Swedish pioneer farming in Nebraska at the end of the 19th century.
I enjoyed the characterisations and the different immigrant communities striving to establish themselves in their new country, with their lives and losses and hopes.
I especially liked barefoot old Ivar. Great character.

Willa Cather was an unknown writer to me before this book was recommended by one of my online friends on GR. The genre is historical fiction as well as a classic.

I love stories about the pioneers of the West; the strong people who went seeking land hoping to prosper and make a better life. The writing is simple and blends perfectly with the Swedes and other people who migrated from Europe in hopes of owning and farming land in Nebraska. At less than 200 pages this was a quick read and a good escape into the era with a memorable main character. It is the first in a 3 part series, but the ending is satisfactory on its own.

This classic, totally went down a different path than I expected. The first two parts seemed settled on early Nebraska pioneers and the resulting farmland. The last part was a bit of a tragedy. I enjoyed it, but it was not of a caliber to be overly memorable. The most interesting I think is in how there was a strong female protagonist (yet alone) who stood up for herself. But in some way this made her a weaker woman in failing to recognize the inter-relationships of the people she loved best around her.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. The thing that did it for me was the sense of place, with pioneer Nebraska practically a character in and of itself. I suppose it doesn't hurt that my mother was born in Hanover (Kansas) and grew up in Nebraska.

O Pioneers! by Willa Cather – I love coming of age novels and the immigrant experience, and this is a perfect example of both with a stalwart leading little lady! Happy Reading!

My dad has recently embarked on a journey to read "The 100 Greatest Works of American Literature" (using some random list he found in a Google search that contains widely-agreed upon classics). He recommended O Pioneers! to me, which I always assumed was boring as a child. I consider myself converted. Beautiful.
