I didn't love it as much as the Outlander series -- too much moving the plot, not enough character development -- though I do enjoy the character of John Grey so I will likely continue the series in hopes of more character/less plot in the next book.
I'm really torn with this one. I was confused through most of it and then at the end there is an hour long chapter to reveal everything. Lord John Grey thinks the man his cousin is going to marry has an STD and he wants to find out. Now I kind of feel like he should have just confronted him about it, but that wouldn't make a good or long story. So then people are being murdered and all these other things are happening and it was a very long book for a side character in Outlander. I have the other two main books so I will probably read them while waiting for the next Outlander book. We'll see. This one was okay.
3.5/4. I've been in a reading slump for most of December, so it took me longer than it should have to read a 300-page book. I've always loved Lord John from the Outlander series and wanted him to have his own epic adventures and romance, but this just doesn't compare to the plots in the Outlander books. It was very slow to start and I wasn't that into it, the plot wasn't that interesting, but I did like how it was written true to what I think the historical fiction genre is. I like Diana Gabaldon's writing; this just isn't that strong as far as spin-offs go. But I got the rest of the Lord John books for Christmas, so I'll be continuing the series - if only to see the appearances of some other characters that popped up in Go Tell The Bees in regards to John, and John's character is strong enough on its own to make me not want to give up on his books.
*Sigh*
I can't. I got about 60 pages in, but I just don't want to read any more. I'm bored of this story and it's nothing to do with the book. Gabaldon is one of my favourite authors, I love her Outlander series, but Lord John as a character isn't my favourite, and this sort of mystery genre just isn't for me. I am going to keep all the books in this series though, so that in a couple of years when I reread the Outlander Books, I will hopefully decide to try again, so maybe I'll enjoy them. But at the minute, I don't want to continue.

An interesting read, though the resolution to the mystery was not completely satisfying, as our hero has the whole thing explained to him over drinks in the penultimate chapter rather than figuring it out himself as Sherlock Holmes or Miss Marple tend to do. Even so, the book was fairly entertaining and Gabaldon has clearly spent some time researching some esoteric aspects of 18th Century British culture.
I mostly read this out of curiosity because I wanted to see if Lord John merited his own series of books. The answer appears to be yes. These also have the benefit of being considerably shorter than the Outlander books.

I somehow love and don’t like this book at the same time. I’m a huge fan of the Outlander series and I really like Lord John a lot. This book had kind of a really interesting story to tell but it was a bit disappointing how the end was narrated so fast on the ship and only there. Also sometimes it was hard to follow which person was involved in the intrigues.
The conclusion itself was really impressive and I didn’t guess this web of lies. Still it’s a little below the adventures or Jamie and Claire. I’ll still go on with the Lord John series of course - it’s remarkable to finally have a homosexual protagonist who does not follow any queer stereotypes! Bravo!

This is the second book i read from the series (i started with the last one because people told me it was the best). I enjoyed it a lot. John Grey is just an interesting character and it is fun to read about him. I also do like crime stories. Of course this is different from the 'Outlander' series, which i didn't continue reading because i admit i got a bit bored. This was def. different, refreshingly so.

I enjoyed it, very interesting plot, and very realistic.
However, I found it rather difficult to follow up with the narration of logic of the mysteries for several of Lord John stories
one quote was really true and I loved it:
"a love that sacrificed honor was less honest than simple lust"
very true yet in real life widely misused, "Love", that is.

This book features one of the side characters in Gabaldon's epic Outlander series. He's a terrific character, but this book lacks the richness of characters and description of the Outlander books and left me wanting.
