Continuing my rereading, it’s now 1757 and Lord John is back in London after checking how Jamie is doing at Helwater (as he’s on parole) and finds himself nervous about his cousin Olivia’s nuptials as he believes her husband-to-be is hiding the fact that he has the pox. Grey finds out it’s much more than that.
Reasons I Recommend:
1) A fun murder mystery and intrigue as Grey tries to get to the bottom of it with the help from Harry Quarry and his new eager valet, Tom Byrd
2) Lavender House and a look into the hidden underground of a male brothel where men go in disguise to be who they are, crossdress, and keep secrets illegal to society and
3) Grey solved the mystery, meets a German and a young man named Percy, and tries not to think about a tall redheaded Scotsman.

I really enjoy the Lord John Grey stories, but I am skipping the short stories this time and just focusing on the ones that have their own book.
In this one, LJG is trying to stop a poxxed man from marrying his young cousin. It will take him to a brothel, the Lavender House (an establishment for homosexual men), a ship bound for India, with a poisoning attempt, and a fellow soldier accused of treason thrown into the mix. LJG does know how to cause a ruckus. I love him fiercely.
Oh! This is also where we pick up young Tom Byrd, his valet who will accompany him for many stories to come!

There are so many characters in this book that I have issues keeping straight. I find these interesting, but not enthralling.
This is better as a listen.

Well, that was enjoyable enough😊 We’re back in 1757, and Lord John Grey has returned to London from Ardsmuir Prison, where he first became truly acquainted with the legendary James Fraser. At times, John hints at his posting there as some kind of punishment or reprimand, and, unless I just totally missed the explanation, I’m guessing the true cause of that assignment will be revealed in due time.
Anyways, I cannot lie— the first third of the novel did not hold my attention, but luckily it picked up some as John embarked on quite the private matter or two— an investigation into a gory murder of an English soldier as well as John’s attempt to break the engagement between his cousin and a well-respected businessman due to the latter’s less than well-respected endeavors.
No, the Lord John series is not Outlander, and that’s ok. I’m looking at this spinoff as a bit of a reprieve from Jamie and Claire’s romance, which can be a wee bit exhausting at times in my humble opinion😉 Here we have what seems to be a bit more of a down to earth narrative with some oddball occurrences peppered throughout. Onward we go.
