3.5 A beautifully written book. I really loved C. S. Lewis’ Till We Have Faces, and this book seemed to have a similar feel to a Greek myth retelling. The first section of this book was by far my favorite. There was great characterization, setting, and plot. It’s not a story I was previously familiar with, so I can’t say how or where it differed from the original, but I wasn’t worried about that. The strong characterization did carry through the rest of the book. In the end, the major themes weren’t for me and I wasn’t a fan of the darker twists as the book went on. Still, a beautifully written book.

Ik vind het zeer mooi geschreven, maar moeilijk om te lezen

Eerste boek van 2025!

3.5/5 stars (give me half stars goodreads)
So I was highly anticipating this book, preordered it and everything. This is the authors debut novel and I did very much enjoy it.
Ariadne had realistic emotions and I was surprised by the POV of Phaedra.
I like the struggles Ariadne faced with her mortality.
I felt that the writing fell a little flat for me, when a book is based off greek myth I expect the writing to be a bit more poetic.
This book had its strengths and encapsulating multiple myths definitely was one of them.
I didn’t enjoy the ending of Ariadne, it did come full circle with the gorgon head but I would have preferred to see her rise to goddesshood.

Ariadne was such an enjoyable read. I especially liked how it wasn’t just a retelling of a Greek mythology story, but we got to experience this story from Ariadne and Phaedra’s perspectives. It’s nice to see things from women’s views especially because women often get taken advantage of throughout Greek mythology. I really enjoyed the theme that women often take the punishment for the actions of men throughout Greek mythology and beyond. The author ties this into the stories of Medusa and Pasiphae and carries it into Ariadne and Phaedra’s story. As a woman, I felt that I could really relate to these characters and understood why they thought the way they did or made the choices that the did. I also really felt for these two after everything they both experienced. The progression of all the characters and their actions felt really natural, while the book itself kept a nice pace. I also really enjoyed the ending, as tragic as it was. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Jennifer Saint’s takes on other Greek mythology.

I found this in a little free library and hung onto it for a few months. When my husband and I booked a summer trip to Greece and decided to spend 4 days in Crete, I knew it had to be my book for the trip.

I’m a huge fan of Madeline Miller’s books so I had a feeling I would like this, but traveling to Crete and visiting the archaeological site of Knossos while reading it made me enjoy it all the more.

It’s a beautifully written retelling/combination of multiple myths, and I found it to be more about Ariadne’s relationship with her sister Phaedra than just Ariadne’s story alone. I’m a huge fan of anything that puts previously overlooked female characters at the forefront and this book does just that.

I was extra happy to learn that Jennifer Saint is an English teacher turned novelist as it gives me some hope I could do the same!

I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves reading stories about women, sisters, Greek myths, and highly recommend you book a trip to Crete and read it on location (or at least do some light research into Knossos for the visuals!). I absolutely plan on reading more by Saint in the future.
