The first book in the series I rated a 3, but I'm fully in now. Skye's writing is creepy and, at times, feels like it's meant for an older audience than the juvs, but the adventure of it all will definitely appeal to young folks. What is creepy: having your will taken from you and doing dangerous things as a result. I was actually more on edge in book one, but book two demonstrates the strange power Ozzy's parents discovered much more.

There is plenty of mystery in this book and some of Rin's actions were seemingly unforgivable, but Ozzy found a way to forgive. His slow induction into apprenticeship is full of folly and the mundane, but it feels more real than other fantasty books. Things don't always go according to plan, even if you are a wizard, so why pretend? One of my favorite parts of the book is how Ozzy starts to sound more and more like a wizard himself.

Rin is a confusing character who seems useless at times and at times just completely brilliant. I have to say, I have no doubts anymore about his claims of wizardry. I am impatiently awaiting the next in this series (and going back and starting some of his other series to help with the wait).

Rin and Clark are absolute literary menaces in all the best ways. Poor Ozzy is on a rollercoaster at all times, sometimes Rin's fault, sometimes his own, and often it's hard to tell whose fault the particular rollercoaster episode is.

A fun and still emotional sequel to the first.

The wizard is obnoxious but once again the other main characters carry the story. It isn’t as good as the first one, but it still has me curious to see what happens in book 3.

The second installment of Wizard for Hire was simply ok. The story moved along enough and didn't seem to suffer from sophomore book syndrome, which I appreciated. At times though, it really felt like a jumbled mess. Unless I sat down with a notepad while I was reading and charted down all the places they visited, I couldn't really tell you what happened. Sigi and Ozzy visit New York for a day... Rin returns... (not until 120 pages into the book, mind you) Ozzy is drawn to the ocean... and some bounty hunter is following them around. That's really the basic premise here. Clark the bird was the only thing that kept the story original and fresh. Rin was so annoying I wanted to smack him upside the head half the time. He reads more like an escaped lunatic from an asylum than a wizard. There's a bit of magic in here, but certainly not enough to satisfy you, so heads up there. For me, this series is just... forgettable. In a year or so, I'll probably have forgotten that I read it. I have nothing really negative to say. It's just.... meh.

My issue with the book is that the good.guus really don't seem so good to me. In the course of this story Rin again spends much of it taking advantage of the orphan boy financially which has always bothered me, but he also goes too far. By the end of the story he has systematically taken away everything Ozzie had and somehow he's still supposed to be the good guy? He burned down Ozzie's house, stole his long time companion Clarke and left his daughter and Ozzie alone with a killer. And through it all these kids just keep forgiving him and following him. That's not a good guy and his actions in the story are not in anyway okay. To me he seems like as much of a villain as Ray, he's just trickier about it because he's screwing the kids over and convincing them to thank him for it. Sure its starting to actually seem like Rin has some magic, but actually being a wizard doesn't make him a good guy.

While the story was action packed I don't think it was a good installment to the series because these poor kids are so naive they can't seem to see that Rin is no better than Ray and it wouldn't at all shock me if by the end of this journey we learn that he's only tagged along to get the power of the formula for himself. I'm just really tired of watching Ozzie and Sigi get screwed by someone they trust and keep forgiving him for it.
