I rated it 4 stars, but it's more like 3.5. Emmy is a plucky heroine and the story is sweet and sad. I think this would be better as a YA book.

I thought this book was really sweet. It was kind of a predictable do gooder way. It was a fast read and generally enjoyable.

3.5

This was a light read, although it did contain some heavy themes. I know this book has suffered criticisms that it made light of the War. However I enjoyed that although it was set in the War it wasn't all sadness, army, fighting, blood and guts. People needed to live their lives and do their best to stay positive. There was a big push in WW2 for women at home to keep their heads up, look nice and be happy for their men, on top of doing their part with the war effort (nurses, dispatch, etc). This story illustrates how hard it was for them, how they found happiness in the smallest things, found support in their female comrades and did their best to trudge on without complaint. Also most of these books about WW2 (or WW1, etc) that I have read have female characters that are incredible, strong willed and accomplish some brave act that sets the tone for the novel. This is the story about individuals from everyday life (namely young women) trying their best to make it, who are naive at times and who are just trying to do their best during wartimes given their situation...and who were not the 1%. It was a shorter novel that was lighter in content (with heavy themes built in) but that was uplifting by the end. With that in mind I enjoyed it for what it was.

Such a joy to read this book. The writing style was wonderful to read and flowed beautifully. Each character was welcoming and you became invested in their story. While the story was wonderful to read it didn't avoid the ugliness of the second world war but dealt with it without any sensationalism. I can't wait to read the next book A J Pearce writes.

This was a treat!
I clicked with the main character right away. A young woman in the midst of war - doing all she can to help out by working at the fire station. Her dream is becoming a proper journalist - but she accidentally ends up at a woman's magazin. Yet she still makes the most of that too...

The book has some really sad moments - in war there will always be horrific things happening obviously. But mostly it's more of the "keep going no matter what!" sort of book that leaves you with a smile and hope and not with a packet of tissues and hot cocoa for comfort and solace.

I enjoyed this story from start to finish, even though the end was a bit more soppy than the book felt along the way. I would definitely recommend it anyway!

What a wonderful book.

This is the story of Emmy who dreams of being a journalist. This book is set in the war.

It is a lovely heartwarming story.
