it was a bit hard to follow in places while jumping between the present and different flashbacks, but i loved the full audio drama production! such a great backstory for lourna
The High Republic saga continues with Cavan Scott’s Tempest Runner. An audio drama complete with a full cast and all the usual Star Wars audio fixins! If you’re a fan of those classic radio dramas then you definitely should enjoy this!
The story revolves around Lourna Dee, who happens to be captured by the Republic. The twist? They don’t realize who she is. Which seems like a good thing…
Or could be bad for everyone involved…
Cavan Scott is no stranger to The High Republic fans and once again he delivers plenty of Nihil chaos!
Lourna’s story has all of the action, conniving, and ruthlessness that we’ve come to expect from the Nihil. The story has plenty of twists and turns to keep us guessing. As an audio drama, it needs a lot of your attention to follow. Especially when the story flashes back or jumps around. Much like Doctor Aphra and Dooku: Jedi Lost there will probably be a book version of the script released in the future for those who prefer their stories on the page. The vocal performances are all great, Lourna Dee’s accent is a nice touch, and I’ve already talked about how much I like Marchion Ro’s voice in most of the audiobooks. Plenty of cameos from some of our other The High Republic favorites too!
This is a must-listen for fans of the Nihil and anyone who wants to get the “bad guy” perspective during The High Republic! Like any good villain story, there are plenty of twists along the way, and watching to see who will come out on top is riveting!

Not my favorite of the series, but provided interesting insight into an important character. This was a pretty quick read. It filled in some interesting details relating to the overall story.

Okay, damn, this actually went so well! I loved that this was so incredibly character-focused around Lourna Dee. It’s truly just learning everything about her, past and present, plus what her role will be in the future and I was along for the entire fucking ride.
I mean, what a gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss of a woman.

God this book was a wasted opportunity. You give the cool space terrorist group their own book - terrorists who have caused Galaxy-wide disasters killing hundreds of thousands, purely for the violent chaos of it all. A book focusing on one of their most prominent leader’s origin story… This should be an easy way to give a cool, very antagonistic pov - the dark underside to the High Republic! Complete tonal shift to the main-line novels. Violent, aggressive, ruthless! Well it’s not that!! Let’s make Lourna Dee - a violent psychopath in all other appearances - a bland, relatively
-balanced, protagonist who has a slightly-grey moral compass and loves to make friends and build alliances. I’m so lost at what they were thinking. A mild anti-hero portrayal at best and it’s so disappointing that it fails to deliver any serviceable character piece here. This character didn’t need a half-hearted redemption arc and it feels bizarre to place in the middle of the main, ongoing Nihil conflict. It just feels like High Republic shovelwear. The book also ends exactly where it starts, there’s no large movement in plot here rendering it pretty inessential reading to phase 1.
To be positive, the world building here is great - it covers some very underused areas of the Star Wars galaxy. The pace is rapid and the plot is serviceable. It’s a smooth and easy read and thankfully, being a script, very quick to read through.
