Really incredible book and account of mother abuse. It was difficult to read at some points just because of what Jennette had experienced. I believe it’s a great books that those who want to understand narcissistic abuse should read. I really hope Jennette writes more books.

Jennette's writing is fluid, impactful, and grounded.  I was a big fan of hers when I was younger, due to the success of iCarly.  I didn't watch Sam & Cat, as I had moved on when it came out.  From a person who watched her as a kid, this was heavy (and rightfully so).  As a kid, you sometimes don't pick up on things, you only see what is being shown to you.  Some of the jokes or ironic/sarcastic lines didn't hit for me because I was reeling from the traumatic situations, but I understand that those are comedic relief and her writing voice.  I liked the short chapters, they were almost like vignettes that wove her story.
My heart broke for her and cheered for her.  I wish Jennette all the best.

When this book came out, the hype was immediate across all book-related spheres I am floating in. Because I suffer from book FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) I immediately reserved a copy of it through libby. The title and cover photo alone were enticing enough for me to give this a try, plus I am a sucker for an endearing memoir. This book was chock full of "Wowwwww" and "WTAF" moments, where the author retells the story of her childhood and her blossoming acting career, all the while divulging story after story about her toxic relationship with her mother. In finishing this book, I am left to ponder the depths of trauma all child actors must experience.  I got to the end of this book and I fully understood the title. I finished the final page and thought about all the reasons why I, as a non-involved third-party witness, am also glad Jennette's mother has left this celestial plane and has reunited with her ancestors. I felt such relief for this person whom I have never met, whom I have never even known as a celebrity.  I sincerely hope McCurdy is able to one day fully heal and be at peace with the trauma that has befallen her at the hands and heart of the person who she loved most. Finally, all I really wanted to do after reading this is hug my mother and thank her for always being the parent I need her to be!!  Content Warning: Toxic Parental Relationship, body-shaming, eating disorder, gaslighting, grief.

i honestly don't know how to review a book like this one. disney channel and nickelodeon shows defined all of our childhoods and growing up, you learn about the tragedies and hardships those actors went through for the sake of our happiness. but never can you anticipate the sheer heartache that is reading jennette mcCurdy's lifestory. few books get under my skin to the point where i actually have diffculty reading. even the infamous chapter 21 of the poppy war hurt my heart to read but it was nothing like the experience i had reading this. because this book is not fiction. jennette mccurdy's story is heartbreaking for many reasons, but especially how this is something that has happened to so many men and women in the world. my heart goes out to all those that could relate to the words in this book <3
