I loved how fast paced it was and being able to return to the characters I loved when I was a young teenager. I enjoyed the sense of mystery which kept me hooked.

However...because it has been around 9-10 years since I read the mara dyer series, I forgot a lot of what happened.
It was also very confusing in general, and I have no idea what the ending means at all and if it was actually Mara who caused everything. Please someone tell me what happened at the end there!

So, it is not as good as the Mara Dyer trilogy but I still enjoyed Michelle Hodkin's writing and characters. I just found it a little slow. Maybe because it is the first book? I don't know
one thing for sure, Michelle Hodkin is the queen of cliffhangers.

my favourite line that made me laugh out loud:

“I don’t honestly know. Goose—that’s not your real name, is it?”
“Yes. I’m the fourth generation Goose in my family,” he says with a marvellous straight face.

I've seen a lot of hate for this book, and I came in expecting to dislike it. Maybe because of that expectation, I was pleasantly surprised when I actually enjoyed this story.

So, let's start with the good: this book is very easy to read and engaging. Even though I didn't know what was going on a lot of the time, this added to the mystery surrounding everything, and that's exactly what I loved about the original trilogy. Reading from Noah's perspective was very different from Mara's, more human, maybe, but I really liked being in his head. The number of times "Jesus fuck" was said or thought gives me life (I really thought I was the only fucked up person who said that multiple times a day) and his cocky yet broken persona is my kryptonite. So, long story short, I still love Noah Shaw.

The bad now: although I liked not knowing what was happening, on the whole it was a bit much. I need to be able to follow events and connect things that are happening enough to actually be into the story, and for a while (maybe about the first third of the book) I struggled with this. Jumping back into this world without a reread probably affected this as well, and I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, since I do plan on a full Mara Dyer reread at some point in the future and when that happens, I'll tackle this one again too.

Also, side note, everyone's talking about the sex in this book and ??? There was maybe one scene? I don't understand at all. I came in expecting this to be raunchy as shit and then it wasn't. I would have been happy either way, but I literally expected to be reading a sex scene every ten pages.

So, yes, overall I enjoyed this book. It was a very easy read, and being back with these brutal, take-no-shit characters still makes my black heart happy. Because of that, I'm rounding my 3.5 star rating up to 4, and I know I'll continue reading Noah's story. Is it the best book I've ever read? No. But that's okay, because dark murderesses and broken boys are still things I will always come back for.

The cover is gorgeous. I love looking at it. It matches the Mara Dyer series so well.
I didn't have a problem with the content of this book.

I thought reading from Noah's perspective was good. I enjoyed it. Somewhat. I did have some difficulty understanding some things. There were several confusing sentences that didn't seem to fit. Eventually, I realized that there was no deciphering some of his thought structure and just kept on reading through it. However, I did like the voice of Noah despite some of the trouble I had.

Mara was a very...creepy character in this series. She didn't seem like the same person from the Mara Dyer series.

I really liked the mesh of old and new characters. It was really fun to see them all interact together.
But the dialogue between them sometimes.....was way off and SO unnatural. It was pretty awful sometimes and didn't tend to flow well most of the time.

Also, can I point out that literally NOTHING happened in this book? Like, where was the plot? The plot was nowhere to be seen until about the last 30 or so pages of this freakin book! That's 330 pages where NOTHING HAPPENS! It was super frustrating and just went on for too long. It tried to be such a horror book and fell short. It should have grounded itself as a thriller/suspense and worked on that aspect more rather than making it a giant mystery/horror novel.

I had such high hopes for this book and I feel very let down. Not sure I'll finish this series but the covers are so gorgeous....I don't know. We'll see.

Soooo, still kinda sad about how most things turned out in the ending, but that epilogue gave me hope. I think I would’ve been satisfied with everyone’s story ending with the Mara Dyer trilogy but I can see the potential for this series.... I hope things get resolved early on in the next book bc I hate tension and separations 💔😭
