The perfect break between two heavy reads. This was lovely and moving, finally a romance between people over 40. Both Magnus and Laurie are very set in their ways and very funny, but the way they realise how they fit together is lovely.

Lily Morton is usually one of my favourite writers, but her latest books miss the mark for me. It happened with Playground Games, with Merry Measure and again with this one. Objectively there's nothing wrong with them, but they miss the usual spark. I never got attached to Mags and Laurie, so my connection to the book stayed superficial. I was afraid of the dog issue because of the reviews, but somehow that didn't bother me. I thought Endof was actually good for Mags. Fingers crossed the next one will gel more with me.

Beautifully Unexpected sums up exactly what this book is. It's a book about two older confirmed bachelors whom meet under the most unexpected and hilarious circumstances. Neither ever expected to find someone to settle down with. In fact, they were each against it for their own reasons. This book, like the love between the two MCs, snuck up on me. With the British humour and most proper snark ever, I spent much of the book smiling. I honestly couldn't put it down because it was just one of those reads you enjoy. There is minimal angst and much of the book is spent reading about these two well off men taking the piss out each other. Who can keep a straight face when reading about men who place ribbons on their genitals? I certainly can't and I dare you to read this book and try for yourself not to smile. I assure you, unless you are a robot, it's impossible.

I adored this book, the older characters, the kind of doh! we are in a relationship and oh I actually miss you.
It's wonderful to see these older but not old gentleman realise that they don't need to be alone, that this friendship they build unexpectedly actually is more.
Mags and Laurie are just perfect and this is a beautiful wonderful read.

Reasonably cute, although the banter felt like it was serving as a personality substitute and that got pretty grating.

The writing ability of this author never ceases to amaze me. Before opening a page I know that the balance between plot, pacing and the characters will be perfect and this book is no exception.
Magnus and Laurie are strongly developed characters that had me in hysterics. The non stop witty banter and deadpan humour made for a very enjoyable romantic comedy reading experience. Their initial meeting is arguably one of the funniest I’ve read and it involves creative use of a haberdashery item. I so enjoyed watching grumpy Magnus begrudgingly reveal the person that only Laurie can see and all the lighthearted moments shared between them.
They become friendly and that friendship evolves into more when they can no longer deny the chemistry between them. Whilst that leads to many a steamy moment, it doesn’t automatically lead to an HEA. That only comes when a mystery is revealed and the subsequent crises is overcome.
This was a one sitting read for me that captured my heart and had me constantly laughing out loud.

A delightful read about two older men, a nice departure from the romance about just young men finding love. Both men are happy with their lives as bachelors, one has a new twink daily. But, then they meet each other and form a strong friendship until they realize they can have more, if temporary, as one man is slated to leave back to France. Of course they and up in love and it’s glorious.
This was a funny and sweet romance that I ate up.
