Mixed feelings on this one. Especially after reading the much more grown up series "the Marcellos", by Bethany-kris.
This one in contrast is much lighter.
Minimal string language, no sex scenes (the most was when the H almost got her bra off...),
The use of the term "Mafia" is kinda laughable when you compare it to what you read about them, either IRL or in stronger fiction. There's no criminal activity, no killing, no insight to the life.
This also has a strong high school bully theme running through it ( stronger than the mafia, actually... But perhaps the whole mafia thing comes out later).
It's hard to put the two main characters together. Perhaps because they went from, zero to in love in days? OK yes, they knew eac other when they were like 6 and 9yrs old but that was 12yrs ago. The connection seems forced and there's not much chemistry - again maybe because she rarely spends time with him? He's hot and cold when they do, he's humiliated her in public so many times yet she still overlooks it?
I see a better and stronger connection between Trace and Chase but I don't forsee any kind of happy there!!
BUT!! BUT, BUT, BUT!!!
I'm saying all this from an adults pov and after reading a very adult version of a fiction style mafia series.
This is more suited to the higher end of the YA genre who are looking to read about a bully romance, with the ultimate bad boy and a girl who has a mysterious history that comes to light and changes not only her life but everyone around her.
Easy to read with page turning tellings of lost love, forbidden love, secrets and lies, family, money and power. Who you can trust and who will lead you to life threatening danger with a smile on their face.

Did we all read the same book??? Because 2 stars is feeling generous. Plot is nonsensical. MC has no self respect and mentions gaining weight or not feeling pretty or good enough far too much for my liking. Love interest is a complete jerk and is so hot & cold with the MC that it made my head spin. Sheesh. Only giving it 2 stars because the pacing was good making it an easy read. Audibly gagged or rolled my eyes around 25 times while reading this relatively short book. Sigh* will probably still read book two (why am I like this??!)
Love it! it got to my heart and got me all hot and bothered in a good way. 5 Stars and I can't say more because I need to continue reading.... I want more!
It could have been better but it wasn't. Poor writing and bad narration. The plot could have been salvaged but wasn't.
Olá
Isto é mau
Mas é self published e eu não quero ser cruel
Mas like, não
Nao
Se fores violada, não vais achar hot descrever horas depois o ataque ao teu bf para que ele te beije em todos os sitios onde o teu atacante te beijou
Tipo
Triggering stuff, u know? Aparentemente a Rachel Dyken doesn't know.

Grow tf up

I feel like I'm being generous by giving this book two stars. The idea was there. Some elements should have had better execution. Everything was half-baked. I could only feel the bully part at the beginning of the story. Out of nowhere, Nixon wanted to "protect" Trace even before he knew her real identity.
Suddenly the author wrote about the mafia. And it didn't make sense to me. How could a twenty years old boy become a boss? WTH. A lot of things made me cringe in this book.
The writing was bad. The flow also messed up. A lot of things happened at one time. And did the author want to make a love triangle with Nixon and Chase? Again, out of nowhere.

3.5 - mainly because it took me longer to read this book than it should have. Too much bullying.
Being a fan of Rachel's, I was definitely not expecting this book. I already knew she was a great writer as she's proven in her Seaside novels and her historial romance novels but this one definitely sealed the deal for me - she's officially one of my favorite authors.
The characters in this book were amazing. I really connected with Trace throughout the book - the new girl from a world that is so completely different from the private school life she's now having to survive. The way she handled the bullying from The Elect and the other students. The confusion and heartbreak she felt when Nixon was hot and cold with her. The loyalty and friendship she had with Monroe and Chase. She really came off as a real person to me, dealing with real life issues.
Nixon drove me mad. I understood why he was acting the way he did but that didn't stop me from wanting to strangle him numerous times. Monroe was the best friend that I think everyone could use now and then and Chase was...well, let's just say I started rooting for Chase halfway through the book. I'm totally on Team Chase. Sorry, Dixon.
The storyline was one of the best I've read so far in Rachel's books. It kept me on the edge of my seat, surprised me with the twists and turns it made and even though I started to suspect what was going on towards the end, it still surprised me. I hated having to put this book down but alas, sleep was required after a while.
Definitely looking forward to the next installment of this story.

I know it's weird but I love books where the heroine is bullied... and Nixon is a massive asshole in the beginning - I would have loved to see him more like that but he quickly became sweet. Too bad for me :(
Trace really is naive and she doesn't stand her ground but hopefully she got friends she can relies on.
Another mobster book... I totally am in the mood for them... Christmas spirit yeah
