Emma Theriault - “Rebel Rose”

“The curse is now broken. Now Belle must rise to become Queen”

This brief synopsis above is what made me buy the book. I am a HUGE fan of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and to have the chance to read a story that follows Belle and her Beast after their happy ending was a must!

Set in the Kingdom of Aveyon and against the historic backdrop of the 1789 French Revolution this story follows Belle and Lio as chaos falls against Paris and seems to spread to other parts of France, including their home in Aveyon and asks the question. What can they do to help the kingdom the love?

Emma’s writing and continuation of the story that is a “tale as old as time” is beautiful. The narrative is perfectly paced, especially when reaching the books climax, and the characters have so much depth behind them! Even the new ones we are introduced to in this book. I felt myself loathing certain characters and I believe this is due to her writing style. Belle, Lio, Cogsworth, Mrs Potts and Lumiere feel so real and like they actually lived in this time. I thought this novel was fantastic and a real jewel to read! A must have for any Beauty and the Beast fan.

I know this is book one in the “Queen’s Council” series. So will be picking up the next as soon as I can! Also will be looking for more books by Emma.

The events in this book took place after Belle broke the Beast's curse. The couple was now married, and Belle struggled in her new position as not-peasant and not-princess (because she refused the title). What unfolded was French revolution and how Aveyon (the Beast's kingdom) tried to fight against ending with the same fate in the hands of its own people.

I thought the writing was done well, I was pleasantly surprised by how plausible and French everything was. I didn't expect the story to be so much about politics and to be very serious. It felt like a grown-up version of Beauty and the Beast post-movie. What didn't like about the book though, were the many monologues about Belle's self-doubts and the couple's struggles to have healthy communication.

Have you ever wondered what happened to Belle once she married the prince? This is an amazing book and a quick read. I wish there were more books to add to her story.

An exciting and fun look at what happens after Belle marries the prince. Magic and history meet as Belle faces the forces of rebellion.

Brave and empathetic, but not always as outspoken as her original version, Belle feels for the most part like herself. But unfortunately the familiar characters filling the castle weren't very prominent. Only a few of the new characters were well developed. But in all, fun and enjoyable!

Belle has always been my favorite princess. I was so excited for this book. While not living up to all my expectation, I did enjoy it. At times it felt a little bogged down in the historical details and Belle seemed a little out of character for me at times. I loved the new characters introduced in the book, but wish we had some more times with old favorite. I would recommend if you are a fan of Belle and want to see her adventure continued.

In all her dreams, she left the kingdom she was born in far behind her, chasing adventure on an endless horizon. Aveyon had always been too small for her, too married to tradition, too quiet. It took leaving it to realize how very wrong she had been.

I’m torn on this one. There were definitely things I liked about it. I thought the concept was fascinating. Placing Belle and her prince in France during a revolution seemed like a really intriguing way to tell the story of what happens next. Adding a little history and a little magic was a great idea.
My favorite new character was Marguerite. She was independent, spunky, and bright. I would have even liked to have seen more of her in the story. Her backstory was interesting and she brought a lot to this tale. I think I would have enjoyed it less without her.
There were other aspects of the story that didn’t work quite as well for me. The first half seemed a little slow. I felt like it took awhile to pick up the pace. There was a lot of Belle being unsure of herself (perhaps a little too much) and not telling Lio (the prince) obviously important things.
It does pick up around the middle, but it was predictable. I did like LeFou’s story arc even if it did seem a little out of character is some ways, and the conflict there was a little too easily resolved.
I had trouble reconciling some of Lio’s and even Belle’s choices in this book. Some of the things they did or said just didn’t make sense to me. I won’t go into too much detail so as not to ruin the book for anyone.
I do think preteens and younger teens will enjoy this book well enough. If you are thinking of buying it for a young Belle fan, I would go ahead and get it.

This free arc was provided in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to NetGalley, Disney-Hyperion, and Emma Theriault for allowing my to read and review this novel.

I keep not marking what I am reading. I finished this today and started like 4 days ago. It was pretty good. Plot was okay. Not the best, but far from bad. Love the Beauty and the Beast twist off.

This was pretty good! There's definitely room for improvement, and there was way more French politics than I expected, but it was a solid start to the series and I'm excited to know where it goes next. All in all, 8/10.
