Milk Blood Heat is a stunning story collection by Dantiel W. Moniz. The stories are set in the 'burbs and cities of Florida, most feature young women coming face to face with a difficult choice in their lives. The characters are dealing with racial differences, loss, miscarriage, religious zealotry, sex/power dynamics and more. The stories all expose a truth about our world. I loved the writing and will definitely keep my eye out for more from this author She definitely packs a punch with a sly eye towards society. I listened to the audiobook which was narrated by [a:Machelle Williams|15697607|Machelle Williams|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] and I'd give it two thumbs up.

Thank you to the publisher for the audiobook in exchange for an honest review!

3.5 stars.

Been wanting to read this for so long. Ultimately a short story collection that left me wanting more. More pages in each story to develop the characters and clearer endings. The first five stories were 4 stars, and the latter ones could have needed more work. Would read more from Montiz and see what she could bring for a novel.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I’m not typically drawn to short stories but these utterly captivated me. Written in nearly a spoken form, feeling like slam poetry, whispering inner thoughts we all think only we think. The stories touch on race, politics, babies, motherhood, love, family (born & found), friendship & all gamuts of the life experience. Each story I wish could be flushed out as an entire book, not satisfied with simply the short version we get here. So well written. So well done. I really enjoyed the entire thing.

had to put this one down for a long while before I could pick it back up because as well written and detailed as it is, this collection is also super, super dark and each story ends with almost no resolution. the stories largely center black women’s experiences in Florida, and each was executed w aching, exacting prose, but each story seemed to just dropped off. which I guess is pretty true to life — not everything is pretty or resolved. definitely looking forward to more from Moniz.

These stories peeled back the layers of the human experience and pinpointed the very center where vulnerability and truth lie sheltered.

Thank you Libro.fm for this ALC! I’m late to listening but am so glad I got to it.
