Started a bit slow, but ended powerfully! Highly recommend it.
When Stephen King says “This nightmarish story is incredibly propulsive and original. You won’t shake it for a long time,” I stand up (or sit down and start reading as quickly as possible). This is so horrifying, because it just seems so plausible. There’s a plot twist that made my stomach drop. Loved it, and its possibilities will absolutely stay with me.
Wasn’t terrible. Wasn’t great. The plot was a great concept. I wish it would have focused more on the plot and not so many side stories.
Extremely clever concept with a brisk, dagger-sharp execution that will leave you feeling a bit sickened, a bit rueful, perhaps, but ultimately satisfied. A dark premise that explores a criminal mastermind's unwieldy but somehow believable plan and the horrible places we as humans will go if given no choice.
Interesting if not totally 3-dimensional characters, but good enough to get the job done and keep you hoping for a not-too-awful outcome.
One more somewhat odd thing about the book is the author somewhat alters his writing style near the end, I'd say over the last third. The prose becomes more choppy and literary, and it isn't until reading the afterword that he mentions having written the last part of the book in Kafka's old apartment, so perhaps he was inspired to stretch into some more abstract prose as a result. It didn't bother me, I suppose, but I was certainly very aware of the shift.
Regardless, a top-notch book and deeply dark story that will satisfy anyone looking for a unique and well-told thriller. 4/5 stars.

I loved the concept of this book and was so excited to get into it. I really enjoyed the first half of the book. It was fast paced and really captured my attention. But after it got into the background/creation and attempt to end The Chain, it lost me. The last 20% of the book or so was really over the top and too much in my opinion.
This concept is CRAZY but so interesting and kept me hooked
The first half was easily a 5 star thriller. The second half went down slightly to 3.5-4 star. Overall, really gripping and satisfying to read.
Even though I devoured this book in just over 24 hours I have quite mixed feelings about it. The idea of the story I found really fascinating, being that someone’s child gets kidnapped and to get your own child back you must kidnap someone else’s, with it continuing like a chain for ever. I felt like the idea of this was really really good but the book just didn’t blow me away and was somewhat poorly executed. Normally I’m a lover of short chapters but again I just feel like it was unnecessary and there could’ve been half of the amount of chapters. I didn’t dislike the book I just don’t know if I would recommend it and I would definitely not read it again. And even though I love Fleetwood Mac, every time I saw the book cover I had their song the chain in my head for hours
This was a pretty smart and well-paced thriller that kept me on my toes. I don’t know why but I always find the endings of thrillers really weird. Everything gets massive at the climax and then all cosy for the coda. Weird. But I guess this did it’s job.
The Chain was a very interesting read. It started off slow for me but I got really invested in the outcome about halfway through. The characters are like-able and I was rooting for them. I can’t give it 5 stars because it got a little predictable for me towards the end. I like to be surprised.
