Mangled plot and one dimensional characters, I read this because I’d just finished one dark window and they have similar concepts, with wood curse and old wood spirits ruling infection over citizens as well as the concept of the forest “gives and takes”. Our main characters only personality trait is that she was formerly a nervous child, this is never really shown with descriptions and is really just stated over and over. The “twist” with the Fox was obvious from minute one, so it got annoying that the characters didn’t know what was going on when it was so obvious to the reader. Listened to this as an audiobook.

A slow start, a very engaging middle, and an ending that left me with questions is why this book sits at a 3.

This is a beauty and the beast style retelling and while it was quite enjoyable it felt very disjointed at times.
In this story you follow Cerys (daisy) who is the daughter of the royal gardener. Their realm is split into two cities and separated by woods that are cursed if you enter them. However during the coronation of the new queen, the wood invades their town and infects everyone causing Cerys to flee and try to get help from the other town that she's only heard stories of. Along the way she is accompanied by Fox, who is an actual fox and her best friend from the beginning of the books.

No spoilers so I'll leave it at that for the plot of these two basically going on a quest across these infected forests to save the kingdom.
This book was a bit darker/gruesome in the descriptions of the mythological creatures and the curses they are under.

Overall, this book was a decent read but nothing spectacular but if you are looking for a fast standalone fantasy romance its worth a look.
I listened to this on audio, and I think that may have been part of the problem as well, I really love the male narrator, but the female was basically just talking the entire time with little/no emotions, and it felt very flat.

I honestly think I'll pick up other books by this author because I do think her writing style was good, this book just felt a bit rushed. I'd have liked to see a more cohesive ending with the characters and my one major question which I can't voice because it's a major spoiler.

If you like "uprooted" by Naomi Novik, you’ll probably like this book as well, even though "uprooted" has way more intricate world building. But oh well, both have magical forest lore so close enough.
The book was a lot of fun but i hate the ending (the 6 month time skip was such a cop-out and so many loose ends) and i guessed literally every plot twist. But still, i love the character of Fox, his character development was excellent. They were also so cute together.

It was a slow start, but it did pick up after a few chapters. I enjoyed the characters and the twists within the story.
