I surprisingly LOVED this. I need to be less hesitant of books in the 3.5-3.75 range of ratings because I enjoyed this so much. I loved Charlotte & Jamie together. As friends and as a ship. I love their banter. I actually enjoyed being in Jamie’s point of view. Usually I prefer third pov but I love that this book was in first, and
My complaints:
-
-some of jamies thoughts I didn’t like or agree with, and now I can barely remember them so clearly they weren’t a huge deal. They were along the lines of dumb things teenage boys believe in, usually having to do with girls in their life.
I’m not very versed in Sherlock, except the BBC show that I watched 8+ years ago. So maybe if I were I’d have a different opinion on this. But regardless, an enjoyable read.

Love the concept, but:
- Not sure this is a YA book? Drug abuse, Oxi injections, references to sexual assault. Maybe it’s YA the same way Veronica Mars is YA?
- At times, the Holmes/Watson references are clunky.
- The line “Great great great great grandfather” could be a drinking game. Counted at least 8 instances in the first third.
Moderate: Alcohol and Drug abuse
Minor: Sexual assault

This book could have been a really fun read, but every time I found myself starting to enjoy it again, something disturbing would happen. <spolier> The entire plot point of Charlotte falling in love with a grown man and getting so angry that he would not love her back that she FRAMED HIM is exactly what fuels the idea that young girls are crazy and “asking for it.” And to have Briony orchestrate Charlottes rape was absolutely unnecessary and straight up disturbing.</spolier> The book would have been complete and good without those two points so I fail to see how they compel the story.
I would heavily NOT recommend this to any self respecting feminist.
