i don’t think i’ve fully recovered from this book- it was unsettling but in the best way.
i also couldn’t shake the feeling the girls gave me of deja vu- the bitchy mean girls it’s definitely an experience that most teenage girls have had. each character was raw and had a painful past while trying to fit into social norms of a midwest american town.

i find that there is something refreshing about pathological women in books. i think it’s because of how women are usually perceived as weak and plagued with innocence and would never have it in them to be evil. gillian flynn is amazing at complex characters which i will always love.

although i would’ve wanted the last but about amma to have been slower for my tension but other than that it was so good.

definitely worth a read!!
4 stars!

The ending felt a little rushed to me, especially because it was already a short book. Not sure why it was done that way

So I’ll admit I did watch the Netflix special first. Which I thought was excellent, it was suspenseful and edge of your seat. Naturally the minute I finished it I picked up the book.

I know there are a lot of reviews where people have down graded it for making them feel terrible… let me tell you now this is not a feel good book, it’s not meant to make you happy it plays psychological warfare with you. AND if you have a psychotic family member (mother in particular) this may not be for you.

Having said all that I thought the book was good it did a good job and sucking you into the drama and suspense. I am guilty of comparing it to the show and I think there were some bits in the book that were done much better and explained ALOT for me, likewise I thought that show also addressed some of the storyline better. All in all though very entertaining and (I won’t say enjoyable because well… it’s bat shit crazy, but it’s meant to be) I do recommend it to people who like these sorts of books.

If you are looking to feel good at the end… well, read at your own risk.

This book centers on Camille, a journalist covering a tragic event in her hometown. While the investigation takes a back seat, the story delves deep into Camille's relationships, particularly with her mother and half-sister, Amma. I appreciated the psychological depth in this novel. Flynn skillfully portrays the different ways people cope with abuse, showing how it can manifest in self-destructive or harmful behaviors.

One aspect I enjoyed was the absence of a big twist. Instead, the story unfolds gradually, making the reader feel like they're uncovering the truth alongside Camille. However, I did find some parts overly descriptive. This made it hard to stay fully engaged.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers that delve into complex relationships and themes, this book is worth a read.

This dark book gives you the creepy vibes all throughout. The HBO series also sheds even more light and brings this novel to life.
