Another book that’s been on my TBR for way too long. Okay, as a little sister I can really relate to the sister conflict which is one of the two main issues of the book. I was also interested in the construction of magic and the playing with timelines that occurs. It wasn’t the sort of magic I’m used to reading about, closer to science fiction superpowers. I really enjoy this concept that you can have what is basically the same thing - a single magical gift like being able to freeze things and depending on the setting, aesthetics, and terms used this could either be a fantasy or a science fiction story.

Once A Wtich was a book that flowed very fast with a quick pace that seemed to just fly by. Personally, I enjoyed reading about Tamsin's family - the casual banters, the typical family behaviors. I especially enjoyed the time travels when Tamsin and Gabriel meet up with her grandparents and the rest of her family when they were younger. It was an interesting twist but there were some things that seemed really redundant and there were some slip-ups that was just awkward.

The relationship between Tamsin and Gabriel could have been elaborated more. I felt like things were just too shallow between them - it didn't seem like there were some depth there. And it was hinted that something happened between them but it never went into detail which bothered me to no end.

Tamsin was an interactive character. She seemed realistic and relatable. Very determined yet vunerable about things that hit close to home. I liked her immediately and enjoyed reading more about her.

The plot was very entertaining. It kept me at the edge of my seat because I really wanted to see how the relationship between Tamsin and Gabriel ended and how she would be able to solve the problem that she basically brought upon herself.

The ending was extremely cliche and predictable which kind of brought the book down for me. I mean, it was obvious what was going to happen by the time you reach the halfway mark of the book. However, Once A Witch was still a very "interesting" novel that you might enjoy.

Requested this book from the library on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised! Tamsin is a a seventeen-year-old "would-be" witch in a family of witches. When she was born, her grandmother decreed she would be one of the most powerful witches of the family; upon her 8th birthday, by which point one's Talents generally manifest, there's no proof that Tamsin has any Talent whatsoever.

As can be expected, a mysterious stranger comes to town and requests Tamsin's help with a problem, thinking that she is her sister Rowena. At the same time, Tamsin's reunited with Gabriel, a childhood friend who has just moved back to the "enclave" with his mother. Together, Tamsin and Gabriel have to save the day and all of that (trying to avoid spoilers and stuff).

I read this in a few hours--the plot fast-paced but not lacking, and the ending was just enough of a cliffhanger to make me eager for the next part. Of course, for whatever reason my library doesn't have the second book, [b:Always a Witch|8572704|Always a Witch (Witch, #2)|Carolyn MacCullough|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1286694645s/8572704.jpg|13441494], in it's Overdrive collection or physical book collection, so I've had to recommend that they buy it so I can see how this ends!

A cute light book that had to do with choices and consequences.

There are some places where as a reader I was frustrated that the protagonist was so slow on the uptake or where a character was too good to be real or where a character got her own self in trouble and let others take the guilt or at the end where it seems like it could easily have been wrapped up instead of leaving things open for a sequel.

That being said I enjoyed Tamsin and the ways she interacted with her family and friends and I enjoyed the story.
