another 5 stars for miss lispector!!! this is such a cool book. I wish I understood Portuguese because I bet the writing is even cooler in its original language. I still like near to the wild heart better as a novel, but more so just because this isn't exactly a novel at all. It's poetic, it's whimsical, it's fragmented, it's reflective...feel like I need to re-read it 10 times over to grasp every word of it
dreadfully boring and aimless. not for me

I almost want to give this 5 (not quite, but maybe when I revisit in portuguese 🤫).
Beautiful, beautiful language. Less of a story, more hypnosis of language and concept and imagery. Bordeline incomprehensible at times but maybe that's what I liked best about it? I could just languish in the way Lispector manipulates words and the authorial voice.
Props to the translator too, it can't be easy with Lispector. I really appreciated the pre-face and found it provided helpful commentary and context.
Like wow I love it when people can just write !

A direct and haunting quote from the very start: "Hallelujah merging with darkest human howl of the pain of suffering but a shout of diabolic joy because nobody can hold me back now…I want to eat straight from the placenta, I am a little scared of surrendering completely since the next instance is unknown. Do I make it or does it make itself?"
you don’t finish agua viva; you dissolve into it. truly mesmerizing.
Can a raw thought be eaten? Can the mind leave it untouched long enough to reach paper? Could a written word ever hold the most elemental particle of our consciousness? Can the mind think without folding in on itself?
I don’t know, and neither does Clarice Lispector. But with Água Viva, she makes a compelling case that the act of writing can be pure, unfiltered thought, that language itself can touch the edges of the inexpressible.
