3.5: Another book about which I have very mixed feelings. I liked certain elements of this better than others-the pacing in particular was off for me-but I can honestly say that I've never read this plot, character, or tone before, so that in and of itself was exciting and worth it.

How on Earth, do I describe what I just read? 'Geek Love' started off odd. A whimsical odd. Then an unethical odd. Then the story began to swing from odd to disturbing and back again, but getting darker and darker with each oscillation before just settling in on fucked up. Violence and mistreatment of women is not a unique plot device, but the special brand of woman- hate here was hard to swallow. Beautiful prose. But seriously, what did I just read?

Great. Googly. Moogly!

What a fantastically criminal and outrageous tale! Please pick up if you are in the mood for something that will leave you u comfortable, amd somehow youre okay with it. Its fun, it's sick, it's imaginative, it's a circus of characters. Great read, will be remembering this one for some time now. All aboard the weirdo train!!

Okay. I cannot speak about this book without first bringing up my reading experience. So I'll start there:

I would pick up this book, thrust it down in horror and disgust, then it would HAUNT me. I would bring it up to friends like "you won't believe what book I was just reading", I was looking for reviews on goodreads, and I wanted a discussion with the author herself. I wanted grounding, I wanted a "why", and more than it all--I wanted to put it to rest. This book gave me the deepest need for closure.

Did I ever get closure? I think so...? Maybe?

My biggest complaint? The pacing of the end! From the big moment to the dissolution, that was just a few pages where the rest felt so PATIENT.

From there, I struggle with my other complaints being valid or if it was the point? Like who am I to say that I was disgusted and uncomfortable? Who am I to feel horrified at these bodies? Who am I to want nothing to do with the "other"? Ugh... I think this worked for me. I think this is what Moshfegh wishes she could be.

Never finished. My husband loved this book. We clearly have different tastes. Neither of us ever like a book the other recommends. LOL

I don't really know what to say about this book besides it's probably the most effed up story I've ever read. But I liked it. I couldn't put it down and needed to know what other whack stuff was going to happen next. Wow.

An amazing original story but the ending was just so unsatisfying. I wish it had tied the past and present better.
