Not normally a short story fan but these were excellent. Loved the humor, even the sadness felt a little tinged with it, the personal feel, the twists that changed a story into unexpected endings. Not a bad story in the bunch.
Generally not a big fan of short stories, but this book was quite good. A variety of stories, each with its human interest angle, and some even set in Spokane. Good read.
when i find it hard to connect with a novel, like recently, i generally turn my attention to short stories. this collection is from an author that i admire. i've read several of his novels and like most of what i've read. the same is true for this collection. i really liked all but one of these short stories. the longest story, the story after which the volume is named, wasn't to my liking. in fact, it was kinda creepy.
3.5 stars (average from all stories)
"I suppose every person, at some point, tries to break free from the identity you are assigned as a kid, from the person your parents and friends see, from your own limitations and insecurities. To create your own story." - Angel of Rome
This was a solid collection of short stories following characters from all different backgrounds and experiencing all walks of life. It was fascinating to see the significance of each story and how they all wrapped up. I enjoyed this but there were a few stories I did not enjoy at all. I do recommend this if you are a fan of short story collections that are impactful and pack a punch.

Such a nice way to change up my audiobook routine. I love short stories and this collection and delivery did not disappoint. Most of the stories rated 5 stars for me, but a few were 2-3 stars. Overall I highly recommend!

I don’t read a lot of books about normal, everyday life, but every time I’ve read Jess Walter I enjoy it. His characters are effortlessly three dimensional and complex without being cliche. The silver lining in the darkest circumstances was refreshing. Story quality was incredibly consistent and Angel of Rome was my favorite.
