although I initially did not enjoy all the backstory in the first half of this book, things did come together in a very satisfying way. this is one of the best books about a sceptic's journey into mindfulness. his discussion of the terrifying ten day meditation retreat struck very close to home for me and brought up a lot of nostalgia.
I would absolutely recommend this for anyone who runs hot on the anxiety spectrum. the epilogue includes a great summary of meditation technique and practice.

I particularly enjoyed some of the more recent studies Harris cites with regard to business and military meditation programs at Google and in the Marine Corps. I've always felt that PTSD and workplace burnout are both prime candidates for the healing power of mindfulness and meditation. this book has restarted my own passion for meditation and I really think it should be included in one of those "what if everybody read this book" campaigns.

This book may actually have cemented my erstwhile half-ass commitment to meditate every day.

Dan’s journey was a great one to follow along with. It reminded me that im not alone in my journey with Buddhism and that this journey can take many forms.

I’ve had this book sitting on my kindle for a while. Now was the perfect time for me to absorb it. As someone who has dabbled in mindfulness for over a year, I’ve been in a self exploration phase that allows me to relate deeply to this book. As someone who goes through life with a more than healthy sense of skepticism, this book made me feel seen... and then... optimistic. Harris’s writes with humor and a journalistic approach that works really well. It doesn’t hurt that he has access to crazy experiences and stories about famous people. And man, does he know how to end a chapter with a cliff hanger. A readable, funny, science based book about mindfulness? Exactly what I needed to get me ready for a deeper exploration.

This is a book about a newscaster who found his way to mindfulness and meditation, in spite of being very resistant to anything remotely spiritual, self-help or hippy-ish. If you're looking for a practicing how-to, this is not that book.
