esse livro é político - e que bom que é. (2)

e existem alguns livros que não nos seduzem de imediato,
mas vão ganhando a gente aos poucos. (2). não poderia concordar mais.

esse foi o meu primeiro Agualusa e o que eu mais gostei dele foram as frases-pérolas. aquelas frases tão bem escritas, tão polidas, que mereciam estar em livro de aforismos, sabe? essa cara claramente sabe o que faz. os capítulos são curtos e a narrativa passa voando. dá pra engolir o livro bem rápido.

eu não me conectei profundamente com todos os personagens, não achei que todos foram igualmente bem desenvolvidos, mas aprendi muito sobre a cultura africana. os exemplos do governo autoritário & facista claramente machucam onde dói, hoje em dia, mas até isso serviu de amparo.

o discurso da filha do personagem do principal (lá pela página 210) foi uma das coisas mais arrepiantes de todas. eu geralmente não gosto de história & crítica política misturadas com ficção, mas é necessário. e, no Brasil de 2020, uma forma de catarse pra lidar com o que da acontecendo.

um livro que começa com um epígrafe de Pessoa não tem como dar muito errado. ganharia 3 ★ e meia, se pudesse - ou então 7, se fosse de zero a dez. o tema ~SONHOS E SONHADORES foi o que me me convenceu a comprar e a ler o livro, em primeiro lugar, e o Agualusa costura isso muito bem.

Translated from Portuguese, this novel takes place in Angola. I found myself needing to reference Agonolan political history at the start of the novel to have a better understanding of the story. The story reminds me of hearing someone explain a dream they had. Like a dream, the novels moves around over a few decades and people move in and out of the story and can be rather confusing. I am glad I read the digital version so I could reference Angolan history, and Angolan and Brazil locations. I debated if I should continue reading the story, questioning if was worth my time. I am glad I read the novel, it makes for rather interesting read.

From an old hotelier who appears in the dreams of those around him to a neuroscientist’s research and his machine that records dreams – the journey of Angolan journalist Daniel takes him from his homeland to South Africa, to Brazil, and Cuba.

Among the various surrealist motifs, a scathing socio-political critique is outlined, whose main targets are the corruption of Angolan institutions and the political repressive environment that was being experienced in the country.

Agualusa takes ambiguous elements of the imaginary and unconscious and weaves a long web of dreams that touch and move away at the whim of the story until they reach a dream common to the Angolan population: the desire for change that has been evident since the colonial war. If the cover and the title are not enough to win over readers, they will surely be captivated by the writing, very much based on the orality of each character, and by the fantastic chimeras painted by the author.
