I picked this up on a whim and wasn't sure what to expect, but was so happy I did. This was a great read. Definitely looking forward to book 2. I loved the twists and turns even if I did see a few of them coming. Enough of them took me by surprise too.

I put this down months and ago at 75% and finally picked it up and pushed through to the end. It started out so strong but couldn’t keep it together - there were so many types of otherborn, too many people introduced too quickly that I struggled to keep track of, it just felt so complicated. There is such incredible potential here, one of the most intriguing worlds I’ve seen built in YA. Maybe it was me and not the book.
Also, I think it would have been better without the romance entirely.

2.5/5 i really loved the world but some of the characters felt a little 2D
maybe i'm just getting a little too old for YA but the writing was very action-focused, i didn't feel as much of an emotional pull toward the characters even though i found their powers and the world around them really interesting. that's not to say i disliked the characters, i just didn't care for them. they were fine, all of them were fine. and maybe bianca, was a little cool.
i think my main complaint with the book has to be the number of times lore was simply dropped in long paragraphs... i'm not exactly used to this kind of writing and it's not exactly my cup of tea. however, at the end of the day, the vibes of the world and the different powers of the other-borns was really interesting and i'll definitely be reading the sequel to see if the world and its characters get more in-depth development!

This was such a clever twist on "urban" Greek Mythology and I really enjoyed it. The writing was very high quality, the characters were strong, the world fascinating, and the plot kept me engaged from page one.
I love the concept of the gods being gone but remnants of their powers still existing in their descendants, the Otherborn. It was such a cool way to incorporate the Greek Mythology without it being the same old story or having the gods themselves as main characters. And the cast themselves was super interesting - straddling the line between human issues (jealousy, belonging, romance, grief, etc.) and those of the gods (ethics of powers, a higher calling, abuse of power, etc.). It all blended together so well.
And I was really invested in the storyline, the murders and the riot and how it all blended together. It was unique and very strong.
I did get annoyed with the inner monologue of the main character at times, and there were moments where I just wanted to shout at her to grow up or open her eyes - but it was never a complete turn off either. I love a flawed character but sometimes....you just want them to be less oblivious!
It was obvious to me that Hatzopoulou had a very clear vision and the skill to execute it, making for an excellent story. I am very excited for the sequel!

I love a dark, tide-dependent world setting. Interesting magic, a bit much to keep track of with all the different gods and their descendants.
I really enjoyed the departure from the typical sibling relationship and the exploration of the power dynamics that can come into play between sisters in a non traditional family structure.
