I didn't expect this one to be amazing, but it managed to fall short even of my very low bar. Set-up was a little unbelievable, which I could have gotten over, if the characters and writing weren't so terrible. Lance and his 'shyness' felt forced and repetitive, like the author could think of literally only one way to show his conflict. Tide, on the other hand, was so pushy, cocky, and aggressive, it made me feel very uncomfortable.

This is one of those "it's not you, it's me" type of books. I just couldn't get on board with the writing style...lots of sex, LOTS of dialogue, not much plot or actions being written out, it's so reliant on dialogue. I started skimming to finish it, but honestly I struggled to do even that.

There were both good and not-so-good things about this book for me. It was sensual and sexy, as I’ve come to expect from most Sean Michael books.

My personal issue with this one was that it felt like Tide, the Dom, was steamrolling Lance from the moment they met. Here’s a guy who’s shy, inexperienced, insecure, and Tide was all over him, basically not taking no for an answer, more or less pushing him into things that he ended up enjoying, but it was dubious consent at best to me. It seemed so out of character for a shy virgin to be willing to not only jump in the sack with a guy he’d JUST met, but then have sex in front of others and go bareback, all within a week or so.

So that took away from my enjoyment, but it was still a fun read aside from that.

There was a bit too much of "Sweet Boy", "Good Boy" and internal praising of said boy for my taste.

I wish there had been more of a plot out side of the couple's relationship. I would also have loved a slower build up to their relationship. Going from meeting to a trusting BDSM-relationship within a few days didn't feel realistic to me.

One of my favorite things about reading Sean Michael's work is that I pretty much know what to expect. There are times when all I want to read is a story with lots of sex (and I do mean LOTS) and little story line. I want to read about the connection the men find without the influence of a secondary plot. I love how the Doms are super sweet and super sexy and do anything for their sub. There is always heat and passion in these stories and I can't get enough.

Do you want a lot of plot and a lot of introspection? Click off. This is not the book for you. This book is 300pljs pages of what fannish people would call PWP, aka Plot what plot? Everything is either fluff or slowly intensifying BDSM with personal conversations and contract negotiations spread throughout.
I know what your thinking, if that's what this is..why 4 stars?? Because what it did, it did very VERY well! Sean Michael is awesome at it. Beautiful writing, perfect grammar and editing, stunning and languorous BDSM scenes that make up the majority of the book. Would I read a version of this with the plot more fleshed out? Sure. Do I think this version needs that? NO! Excellent work. I'm defintly going to continue reading this series.

3.5 Stars Lance Packet is the consummate shy nerd, but he’s also a really good photographer, so he hides behind the lenses of his cameras. Nobody cares as long as the pictures are good, right? On a referral from a friend, Lance lands a job shooting pictures which will comprise of a deck of cards. Not just any deck of cards, though—a fetish deck. It’s enough money to pay his rent for three years, so he’s determined to do the best possible job for his employer. Then he starts to interview models, and in walk Tide, Tyrone and Bran.

“No. No, I’m doing a deck of cards. A fetish deck.” With leather and chains and anal and…. God, he was never going to survive this. Not with these stunning men as potential models.

Tyrone and Bran have been in a steady D/s relationship for years, and are comfortable with each other, their bodies, and in displaying poses consistent with their lifestyle. Tide and Tyrone have been best friends forever, even before Bran, when they founded the Iron Eagle Gym for males in the BDSM scene. Tide has always coveted what Tyrone has with Bran. He longs for a sub of his own but doesn’t want the full-time lifestyle. Tide wants a partner, one who will be submissive in bed but an equal in other areas of their lives. Lance fits this perfectly as a shy man who owns his own business. Tide goes after Lance with a laser-like focus after their first meeting, and what develops is a sweet love story between the two men. Watching Lance gain his confidence and come out from behind his camera and be introduced to the BDSM lifestyle was a treat.

He was so fucked-up, so confused, and the only thing that made sense was Tide.
Tide took another kiss, this one slow and gentle. “You’re stunning, Lance. I can’t help being attracted, and I don’t even want to try.”
“I don’t know what to do now,” he whispered.
“That’s why I’m the Dom, darling.” Tide gave him a wink, hands soft as they moved over him.

We really don’t get to see much of the gym in this book, but since book two is about Tyrone and Bran, I think that will change, as the two men spend a lot of time there. I also wish that there had been a bit more story to go along with the sex. This is a Sean Michael book, though, so there is lots of sex, nicely written, great sex, but it’s just in this story I really wanted a little more umph to these characters.

The plot has two really fantastic premises—the deck of cards and the gym—but we just don’t get to see enough of either. I’m looking forward to the other books in the series. The Perfect Sub should be out soon, and Sean Michaels’ Facebook blog says he is currently writing book three. Hopefully, it’s about the mysterious man who is the silent partner in the Iron Eagle Gym. If not, can he be book four?

I’ve read this author before. This is a mm contemporary story with BDSM elements. Master Tide and New Boy Lance are so hot together. I’ll be reading more from this series and author.
