It is Sabine's story and then it is Charlotte's story and then it is Alice's story,
left open with no ending.
None of them are likeable, really, but they are all real and complex, full of pain and rage and obsession. I loved the way each girl had her own unique narrative voice, and thought the story flowed seamlessly from one girl to the next.

The one piece that pulled me out of the story was
the inclusion of the psychic
. It felt out of place among the rest of the story, and I think the question could have been answered in a different way.

My character thoughts:
For me, Sabine was a villain from the start, as soon as she drained the woman who made her - but it was facinating to experience her life, the things she learned and the people she learned them from. I felt for Charlotte as she was groomed, so clearly manipulated and isolated, but over 100 years, she could not use innocence as an excuse anymore. I do wish, for her sake, that she had been able to enjoy "life" without the shadow of Sabine - there is some victim blaming in telling her it is her fault when her lovers die, knowing what Sabine will do. But can I blame Alice, who was also used? I think the point is that it is left unclear what path Alice will take, if she will be cruel and ruthless and vengeful, or if she will be kind, and help others. I was really struck by Alice's memories, and how she was shaped by her experiences with her sister.

Overall a really thought-provoking book, seamlessly blending time periods and characters with a darkly engaging through-line.

You'll find different characters that turn into vampires and how the story unravels can be deceiving, but really interesting. I enjoyed the fact that this book goes deep into the hunger for blood, how it feels and how it can make a mind go wild and savage from hunger.

I devoured this book in less than 48 hours.
I wish I could rate this infinity stars.
Whatever words I come up with in the next few minutes will never do this story justice.

This gave me the same feelings of existential reflection/contemplation of impermanence that Addie Larue gave, but with a much darker theme and air. I think I had an evil grin plastered on my face the whole time because the female rage in this book is palatable and freaking inspiring lol

The setting was perfection and ever changing. From Leon Spain to Boston MA, this felt like I was carried around the world and got to experience each city at a different point in time. It was a beautiful and violent adventure.

I fell in love with every single character and found relatability in each one.
The rage, the anxiety, the need for love, the longing for more in life…all of it. It was so real.

Perfection. Literary perfection.
No notes, no criticism, I wouldn’t change a single thing.
