I didn’t know it was a children’s book before I started reading it and since I genuinely don’t like children it wasn’t really enjoyable to hope that the kid would just disappear or shut up all the time.

STOP THIS BOOK-

First Read: August 6, 2020 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ~ I absolutely enjoyed this wonderful middle grade novel! I didn't expect to love it as much as I do. There were many times that I laughed so hard and almost cried. Alex as a MC was so enjoyable to follow because of his naive and innocent nature, his pure heart for others around him, and his ambition to follow his dreams. Despite the book being for middle grade, I believe everyone from all ages will gravitate towards this wonderful book. There are important themes demonstrated very well to a middle grade demographic such has mental health, broken families, etc. I also appreciate the small filipino representation. My only small complaint is the unique way this book was written. I didn't love how it was told at first, but I think it fits with the plot. Although this is technically a contemporary, I feel as though this book felt really whimsical and magical. Alex became one of my favorite characters to read about so far this year and this book became one of my favorites as well. This will always have a special place in my heart and I hope this book gets more hype than it deserves.

Second Read: March 13, 2025 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (1/2) ~ Read this book for the first time 5 years ago. Remember loving it & how much it meant to me. It still stood by me til this day. Knew I wanted to re-read it. I'm so glad I was able to annotate some of my favorite scenes and quotes. This book still stands the test of time! It's technically written for kids, but I think we can get alot out of it as adults. It teaches you innocence is literally bliss. It teaches you the truth does matter even if it's hard to tell the truth. Broken families doesn't mean it's not possible to mend again. And that mental health is important to take care of so we can be our better selves to our loved ones. As much as I still love everything about this book, I have to dock down half a point, only because it was a little slow in the beginning. But other than, that once the story picked up, I was reminded how much I love this story. I love Alex and Carl Sagan. I love Terra for being willing to be there for Alex even if she barely knows him. It's the perfect middle grade for sure! Recommend to everyone!

Sweet coming of age story about a young boy learning about his mom and dad and coming to terms with their choices. It was a cute read kind of similar to the curious case of the dog in the night.
It's like [b:The Flying Troutmans|2940207|The Flying Troutmans|Miriam Toews|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1377628484s/2940207.jpg|2969638] if it were told from Thebe's POV. But the decision to write the entire book as a series of audio transcripts didn't work for me.

This book seems to be about a boy who loves rockets but it is much more. It's about that move from childhood to adulthood. It's about family and struggle and love.
One of the best audio narrations I've ever heard. The full cast, the ambient noises, Carl Sagan's (he's a dog) woofs, it was all great.
I feel like people of all ages can get something from this book, but I especially noticed as an adult reading a Middle Grade/Junior Fiction book, I picked up on so many small nuances, context clues, allusions, and moments seeing them through my eyes rather than the 11yo protagonist's. Overall phenom.

The concept for this was really original, I loved that about it, it definitely wasn't cliche. It wasn't intense, but it had drama, but viewed from the eyes of an 11-year-old, so it wasn't as deep as it would have been, had it been written from the perspective of his adult brother. I was definitely sad when I finished the book, but not because the ending particularly bittersweet, it was the kind of sad you get after finishing a good book and knowing that you'll never hear from the characters again. That's how I can tell whether or not it was a good book. If I finish a book and all I feel is a vague appreciation for it, it wasn't as good of a book. Anyways, this book is definitely worth a read, it may take a little bit to get invested in it, but it's worth it.
