this is one of my favorite gothic novels of all time for a myriad of reasons, but coming back to jane feels comforting.

reading with a modern eye, yes a lot of the book is dated and Rochester is particularly vile throughout most of his appearances in the first 75% of the book - but he isn’t the point, right?

jane, for when it was written, was taking steps that most women wouldn’t dream of in order to protect herself and better herself. imagine never being able to even consider independent dreams and reading a book where the heroine declines the advancement of a man in exchange for her own self respect? she’s an astonishing character for the time period!

Jane Eyre has become one of my all-time favorite literary heroines. I really don't have anything original to add that hasn't already been said about this book, but I am so happy to have read it.

Impressive narration distinguishes the many characters. Novel itself is romantic, overstuffed with gothic elements, but redeemed by the character development and ruminations on ethics and morality.
