I was so obsessed with this series when I was 10, and finally got around to re-reading it again! Still amazing, and though it uses common fantasy tropes/cliches a lot, it still has its own charm and magic.

I didn't really like this book, which was sad because it was one of those books that you'd love to love, but you just can't. The talking pig was enough for me, and i love animals, i really do, but i just don't really like, um, talking ones.

too predictable, but then again it was in the juvenile section.

This reminds me a lot of The Dark Hills Divide. I don't know why, it just does. The picture on the back is kind of creepy, but I can't actually remember where it fits into the story.

Careful, responsible Leo inherits an amazing music box from his batty Aunt, which comes with three rules: never wind it more than three times; never move it while it's playing, and never close the lid until the music has stopped. Because he's careful and responsible, Leo obeys these rules. Right up until his irritating cousin Mimi comes for a visit and starts breaking rules left, right and center.

Clever and enjoyable. Glad I read it, and I'm planning on recommending it to my child.

While the writing style was nothing special, the story was engaging. Leo predicted other character's thoughts a little too much, and I often wondered why the story wasn't in Mimi's perspective. The story ends with a ton of exposition, but I enjoyed the food for thought at the end, even if it was a little abrupt. The world-building was wonderful and the author took inspiration from fairytales without making the fairytales dominate the story. I particularly like the hidey-holes. I wish we had learned about the Blue Queen's motivations- she is a rather cheesy villain. But even cheesy villains have their place. All in all, the story is fun to read and has a nostalgic feel without feeling like a complete copy of other fairytales.
