As I have developed something like a high regard for Australian children's literature I was delighted to discover a new to me author and the first book in the Key to Ronda series.

Once the story got started and we got into Ronda, the book was rather unputdownable and I finished listening to this book in audio format really quickly.

The adventure is quite scary and takes us into a parallel universe where fairy tale figures are alive and nothing is quite as it seems.

What diminished somewhat my enjoyment of this story was the rather boring and static relationship between the two main characters when they had to discuss what they wanted to do in fairyland.

Rodda has built an amazing world in Rondo, filled with your favourite (and not so favourite) nursery rhyme and fairytale characters. Beautiful cover design.

The story was a little younger than I first expected, from the cover I thought it was YA, but it's more appropriate language and characters for kids 9-12yrs. I loved Mutt and Mimi as sympathetic characters, unfortunately I didn't warm to Leo, the protagonist. I found him a little judgemental. Mimi and the surrounding characters more than made up for him and most kids would love this story.

Two things drew me to this book. The first was the author. I LOVE Emily Rodda's "Rowan" series and "Rowan of Rin" is one of my favorite fantasy books to recommend to 4th graders.
I was also drawn in my the gorgeous cover art.

So I read Key to Rondo and really liked it. It's got fairy tale characters interwoven in a whole new story. It wasn't an amazing read, but I enjoyed the time I spent with it.

I first read this book back in 2009 so when I added the sequel to my request list from the library, I knew I needed to reread the original to remind myself of the events before trying to pick up where I left off 11 years later.
The only thing I remembered was that I loved this book the first time.
I really enjoyed it the second time as well, especially the cheeky humor that Rodda weaves into the entire narrative.
I highly recommend this book.

When I was younger, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy the story. Then, next thing I knew, I had completed the book.
