Somehow, I’ve never read Huck Finn before now! I read this as part of my project to read through Karen Swallow-Prior’s On Reading Well, along with the specific works she references. I loved it. Laughed until I had tears rolling down my face near the end. I can’t bring myself to give five stars because the deep racism is so hard for me to read. I know it was part of the time and culture, and I honestly appreciated the window Twain opened for me into the mindset of people at the time- it has created good conversations with my kids and caused me to wrestle with true conviction based on Truth and when we are simply following/violating cultural norms.

Another classic! A familiar story to many, of course, but reading this through by audio was a delight through and through (or “by and by” as Huck Finn says after almost every sentence). I was just amazed at the dedication of Mark Twain to write this whole story in back-woods souther dialect. It was remarkably skillful and enriches that story immensely. I hope to get a paper copy of the book so I can study the spelling and syntax of the writing a bit. If you don’t know the story, let me tell you that it is full of color, natural human emotion, and youthful longings that probably need to be revived in some of us crusty adults.

I've always felt kind of guilty for not liking this more than I did. Like, it's this amazing story, or so they say, but I just... it was okay? I'm sorry Mark Twain.

I love Mark Twain, although I'm often surprised that I was allowed to read anything by him as a child. My favorite of these books, even more so that Tom Sawyer. Also, it most certainly should *not* be taught to anyone with the "sanitized" version just published. That sort of censorship is both disgusting in its own right, is deceitful, and makes that oh so common mistake of assuming that children are fragile and need protecting from all the realities of life. If they are not taught about the mistakes of our past, how can we expect them to understand the realities of our present.

Its a little sad there are no more adventures because I had such a good time listening to these adventures. How did he think of it all and in the definite mindset of young boys.

I remember reading "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" for the first time in high school. I wanted to refresh my memory by re-reading the source material before diving into "James" by Percival Everett. I decided to do a tandem read/listen to this book, and I'm so glad I did. Elijah Wood's narration was absolutely spectacular! He brought the book to life with so many voices and characters. It felt more like a wonderful performance rather than just a reading.
