Pros: Subverts quite a few tropes, themes, and narrative structure decisions found not only in YA but books in general. Dramatic. Catching. Extended war preparation and action scenes. Distinctive characters. Consideration taken to character dynamics. Complex relationships- romantic, platonic, adversarial. In retrospect, though maybe not initially, a very satisfactory conclusion to a series.
Cons: some scenes and ending may seem abrupt. Some relationships may seem inconclusive. There are some rushed narrative bits that adjust the tone but seem necessary to conclude the narrative within a page range. Not troubled personally in reflection, but it may bother some readers.

I personally loved this ending. Definitely recommend the series as a whole. Amazing
The end to a long and suspenseful journey
I will admit, I cried at the end. This was a very interesting and unique world that was created, and a long bloody fight to the end. I really enjoyed it; the characters were so rich, I really cared about them and the impossible struggles they faced. It wasn't a fairy tale ending, but it felt right. Definitely worth the read.

“Little Katharine. Gone as Little Mirabella is gone, and how she mourns them. How all women must mourn the loss of those little girls, relegated to shadow as they grow.”
I thought this was a very worthy conclusion to this dark, witchy series. After adoring the first book, I didn't find the next two as engaging, and though this one suffers from some uneven pacing as well, the ultimate fate of the girls and Fennbirn is twisty and unpredictable.
Katharine is full of the dead, an Undead Queen sitting on the throne. Jules Milone is Legion Cursed, fighting a battle against her own mind at the same time as fighting one against the legacy of the triplet queens. When Mirabella defects from Jules and Arsinoe to return to Katharine, she hopes to be able to bring them together, to fight the curse of the island and the death coming for them, but the island has other ideas. The mist is coming for them all.
There are always certain characters that I enjoy more in these kinds of books; it's like a relief to get to their chapters. But in this case, I actually found that they were on equal footing. I was interested in everyone, and wanted desperately to know who would take the crown. Katharine's story is tragic, and she was my favourite from book one. I still enjoyed her here, though both Mirabella and Arsinoe are equally as intriguing and made it impossible to choose a favourite any longer. All of the girls are very well-rounded, dynamic characters, with love in their hearts where their families wanted hate for their sisters, and I really like that aspect of the series.
Plot and scenes that drag are just one area that these books fall a little short. The twists, the battles, the intense scenes amongst the sisters - all of those are well done and intriguing. But there are some scenes that seem to last forever, some discussions with advisors and training scenes and whatnot, that just feel unnecessary and slow the pace down dramatically. I think that this last instalment could have done with some trimming, and maybe then the pacing wouldn't have felt so jolting and uneven.
I see the criticisms about the lack of information about the Mist, about the Blue Queen, about a lot that was introduced in the earlier books, and I do agree, but for me, it didn't ruin the appeal of the book as a whole. I felt engrossed for most of it and just really wanted to know what would happen. The twists and the ultimate end to the series were unexpected, and I still adore the world of Fennbirn, and the world-building Kendare Blake has done throughout these books is wonderful. I can still *feel* the island when I think about it.
Overall, as I said: I think this was a worthy finale. I didn't adore this series after the first book, but I'm glad I stuck with it nonetheless for its memorable characters, vicious, witchy fantasy world, and unexpected twists.

This series officially lost me within a few chapters of Five Dark Fates. I wasn't invested in the characters or storyline, which leads me to believe it probably could have been wrapped up in three books. It's a shame because my excitement through the first instalment had me thinking this series could become a strong favourite, but I just don't think there was enough urgency in plot to keep me engaged here, given that I'd already followed these characters for some time.
Ultimately this was neither a good nor a bad time, hence the non-committal rating. I think I'd still recommend the series overall, and it may be one of those that packs more of a punch if you read all the books in quick succession, rather than leaving gaps like I did. But hey, glad I got through them anyway, and I remain confident in Kendare Blake's authorship so she may yet write something else I could love.
