Louisa May Alcott

One of my childhood favorites. I reread this for the first time in probably 25 years, as (an unnecessary) prerequisite to [b:Hello Beautiful|61771675|Hello Beautiful|Ann Napolitano|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1687803098l/61771675._SY75_.jpg|97397727]. A little more religious-y than I remembered upon revisit, but still delightful. It was also fun to reframe Jo’s ending after having watched Greta Gerwig’s brilliant interpretation on film.

Loved the characters, and I adored the little moments of self insertion from Louisa May Alcott throughout

At the end of act one, she gives you an opt out if the first act wasn’t interesting to you LOL.

Two of my other favorites:

“As young readers like to know how people look, we will take this moment to give them a description of the young women”

“Jo must have fallen asleep, as I dare say my reader has during this little homily”

I have SO much appreciation for this book, but it took me forever to get through. I do blame myself though considering I picked it up and put it down multiple times, I think if I read it all at once I would’ve enjoyed it more.

pray that louisa may alcott's spirit will forgive me for this but i am a Little Women (2019) stan.

listen... i know. i watched the movie first and usually when i do that reading the book is kind of a chore. and although i love the march sisters and the characters and the story as a whole, it took me over a month to get through it and i felt sleepy several times. BUT in my defense i am also in a reading slump so that definitely plays a big part in my difficulty getting through this.

i finished this about 2 hours ago and, in fact, i rewatched the 2019 adaptation and GOD from the jump it felt so good to see it again!!! it was actually really good to 1) find some of the details i'd missed the first 2 times & compare some aspects to how it went in the book and 2) knowing the full backstory around some scenes and, again, compare it to the book. i love the photography, the actors, some of the changes that greta made (Women–)... but of course, it all came from this book and overall i am glad to have read it! can't promise a reread tho

"For love is the only thing that we can carry with us when we go, and it makes the end so easy."

I feel like I will pick up this book many more times in the future, and I can always be sure to find wisdom, warmth, or comfort in the lovely life of the Marches.
