This book wasn't my favorite in the series, which is concerning because it's only the 3rd and I'm still at the "should I read all of these books" part of the series. I'll probably read the 4th book and assess after that.

I found the murder mystery "eh", the character back and forth "eh", and the romance "huh?". So not a ton to recommend I'm afraid. It's a decent book, there are definitely way worse out there, so if you've enjoyed the first two books read this quickly so you can move onto the 4th book.

Hm…

I liked the first two books in the series. This one was a bit less engaging. Maybe I’m just getting less enthusiastic in my old age. I’m not a fan of all the “he looked in her eyes and saw….” Puke. Seriously, how closely do other people look at each other as intuit emotions and whole conversations? I just want to see the characters act out their lives, don’t tell me how they feel through someone else’s perspective.

Someone killed Connor Swann and tried to make it look like he drowned in the Thames River. They found strangle marks on his neck and ruled it a homicide. Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James visit the rural town where it happened. Several years earlier, as you learn in the prologue, Swann’s estranged wife, Julia, watched as her older brother drowned in the same river. Swann loved placing bets on the horses, and he wasn’t great at it. Swann’s mistress insists his estranged wife killed him. As to the estranged wife, there are many in the community who wonder whether she killed her brother some two decades earlier.

But it’s not that easy, as you’ll learn if you read this. This is a British-type police procedural written by an American. You won’t find the kind of rapid cuts from scene to scene and fast action you would if this were a film. It’s slow action but not boring action. I enjoy these two police characters a lot, and the plot leaves you wondering about the relationship between these two. Kincaid comes off as a bit of a loser in this book, but Gemma isn’t as choosy as one would like her to be either.

his was a quick read, but it was also a story that drew me in. The book starts with the death of a young boy by drowning years before. Now years later, the boy's sister has just lost her husband to drowning. The death is suspicious, and because of the family involved, Scotland Yard is brought in. This is one of the earlier Gemma and Duncan books. Gemma is relatively fresh from her divorce while Duncan has closed himself off from emotional encounters. However that changes when he meets Julia, the wife of the dead man. Unfortunately, she is a suspect which makes his attraction dangerous. Plus Gemma is fighting feelings that are developing toward him. Although I'm not a huge fan of romance in books like this, Crombie handles it well. It's not the main focus of the book. This was an interesting story. I figured it out mostly by process of elimination, but it still comes with an interesting twist.
