“I never stopped loving you. Even when I hated you with all of my being, even when I hated myself for it and wished I could carve my heart out of my chest, I still loved you.”

I wanted to get my hands on Avery and Emmett’s book since the beginning of this series. Ruthless King fell a bit short with my high anticipation. The reason for their past breakup and that caused so much damage between them so I wanted a good reason and in the end I wasn’t a bit fan of it.
Miscommunication is something I don't like that as conflict because I hate that a wait for characters just sit down and have a normal conversation especially when they clearly love each other.I really enjoyed this romance, Avery and Emmet have great chemistry. The characters are interesting, well-developed and written, I truly felt for them.If you are fan of second chance romances, like I'm definitely Ruthless King a try.

I really, really hate to do this but this book took me two weeks to read which is not a good sign (since I finished the first 80% in 2 days). After finishing the first book in this series and being pretty disappointed, I decided to try this one because the entire premise of two exes reuniting after four years apart sounded pretty fun. However, what I got was both disappointing and frustrating.

I liked (to a certain extent) the beginning of this book, especially because there was so much tension between Emmett and Avery, and you know sometimes drama can be fun. Once Emmett finally learns the truth about what happened four years ago and they get back together I was all for it... until some stuff started happening that I really wasn't a fan of.

My biggest critique of the first book in this series was the fact that I felt like there wasn't enough relationship development in comparison to the amount of steamy scenes, and I felt the exact same thing in this book but even worse. Emmett and Avery haven't been together for FOUR YEARS and when they finally reunite it's like they were never apart. People grow and change after four years apart and I find it incredibly difficult to believe that they would be able to fall back into the exact same relationship that they had before.

Another thing this book did that I cannot forgive is the sheer amount of miscommunication between the two main characters. I have said it once and I will say it again, miscommunication never fails to piss me off! The trend of the characters not telling each other shit was basically the plot of this story and I was not enjoying myself because of it.

A couple other things to take note of that I did not enjoy:
- how cliche and predictable certain plot points were
- how possessive and jealous Emmett was (he had no right, especially at the beginning)
- how dramatic some things were made to be
- how convenient the ending was

Honestly, I'm not trying to shit on this book because I can totally understand why other people enjoy it -- objectively I don't think it's a bad book. However, there were too many tropes and elements in this story that annoyed me and the fact that I had to force myself to read the last 8 chapters just shows how much I wasn't into this one. I think it's safe to say I will not be continuing on with the series which is sad because I hoped I had found a new romance series to get invested in.

"You're the constant in my life, in my heart, my everything."

Even though Ruthless King is the third book in this series, it was my first. It's also my first by Maya Hughes and I must say, I'm quite surprised and impressed. Don't let my 3 star rating blind you. This book is a great entertaining read. It's filled with drama and heartache. A very likable, damn hot and vulnerable hero and a strong, admirable heroine give this second chance sports romance the right drive.

"It had only taken almost losing him again to see that I'd rather he saw all the imperfections than be without him."

Although the writing was good and nicely paced, I wished for more character development and seeing more of the couple Emmet and Avery. Furthermore I had some trouble with the reasons for separation, from both sides. But that really is a matter of opinion.

Nevertheless this book got me intrigued to give the other books in this series a chance and I hopefully find the time soon to continue reading this series.

Ruthless King is an emotional enemies to lovers - second chance sports romance, I really enjoyed reading!

I 'd been waiting for this particular book in the Kings of Rittenhouse series and I'll tell you that Maya did not disappoint when it came to Emmett and Avery's story.

When trust if broken can it ever be repaired? If you had a second chance with the one you loved and lost would you take it? What if you never had a second chance?

When I say Ruthless King covers all the feels, I don't say that lightly. This is a story that covers not only a look at the intense feelings of your first love, but the anger and loss over losing it along with the road to how one goes about repairing the damage done to it. Trust is such a fragile thing, given so freely in the beginning of a relationship, but once shattered, it almost seems impossible to repair all the cracks and fissures.

"My heart was carved out of my chest, raw and agonizing and numb all at the same time.... Avery Davis had dismantled me and left me as a shell."

Right alongside Emmett and Avery's relationship is another that has been destroyed on a permanent basis. A team member that no longer has a chance to fix his relationship and his girl that is left in heartbreak. Without giving away the storyline, in case you haven't read the prior book, I love that Maya has included the follow up with Preston and Imogen in Ruthless King. The hard reality that Imogen has to deal with along with the struggling emotions that Avery is facing was an excellent reference to how the heart grieves over the losses in our lives.

"A friend, sibling, parent, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, child - those are all going to hurt in different ways, but none of us can judge which one hurts more. There's more than enough pain to go around."

Maya Hughes delves deep into the loss, you feel the torment, heartbreak, and anger; especially from Emmett, for all the years he's lost in building a future with the love of his life. When things turn around, you once again feel the new-found passion that all lovers share, but you also get that sense of regret for all the time lost over what they missed out on in each other's lives. They both have a lot of growing to do in their new relationship, they realize they can't pick up from where they left off, they are older and basically have new lives, as much as they want to pick up the old Emmett and Avery, they both have changed, and they also haven't changed. They have a lot to discuss about what happened in the past, but they also want to live in their bubble of happiness, you know that bubble...unfortunately the bubble always bursts, what awaits them outside the bubble is not exactly pretty, but have they grown enough to outlast the ugly this time?

If you haven't read the prequel, The Kings of Rittenhouse, I would suggest it, mainly for the fact that you get a huge glimpse of Emmett and Avery before the breakup. You also get a small taste of the breakup scene, but just a small one, because that is what left me wondering what the heck happened to lovey-dovey-forever-and-ever-Emmett-and-Avery? Myself and the rest of the world had to wait a couple books in between then and now biting our fingernails (also if you haven't read those either they are also excellent and Ruthless King doesn't release until January 10th, so you have time to catch up), but it was definitely worth it!!

Ruthless...maybe. Heartless...not as much as he wants to be

Ruthless King is the third book of the Rittenhouse Kings series. However, it's my first foray into their world. I regret that but nothing to do but go back and read the others.

Lovers to murdering each other with their eyes. Enemies doesn't begin to explain the toxicity between these two. History isn't quite in the past when these two can't stand in the same room without it bludgeoning them. . A love So overwhelming turned lethal-and not in a good way.

It was quite the winding journey to get them to that HEA and though I never doubted it, they tend to get in their own way. Lots of love for the Kings and I look forward to the others finding their love.

This book was good, but not great. I’m not a fan of books where everything can easily be solved if characters just tell the truth and stop lying.
