I kind of liked this one even though I am not big into Sci-Fi.

Brady Garrett was almost done training to be a medic. He was a recruit, conscripted into an army formed to defend earth from alien invaders. One day, he was called in to assist the Head Medic with a medical decision pertaining to an officer.
See Lt Cameron Rushton had been returned to earth, after four years of being presumed dead, suspended in a liquid in a pod.

Brady kept touching and messing with pod, and somehow Brady and Cameron's heart impulses became linked. they had to be in constant touch with the other or Cameron would flatline. The other downside was that they became telepathic with each other, they could hear each other's thoughts, experience their dreams etc. Can you say NO PRIVACY!!!!!!

Cameron was sent to warn earth that the Aliens, nicknamed The Faceless, were coming. They wanted Earth to sign a peace treaty or the faceless would attack. This message causes panic, and the Earth forces have to decide if Cameron is really a messager, or now a traitor used to inflitrate the armed forces.
In addition, Brady and Cameron are experiencing physical attraction to each other, which comprises Brady's loyalties. Brady has to be careful because he has a family to take care of, specifically his little sister Lucy. What is he willing to give up?

Whose side is Cameron really on and what is his real mission? Where will it leave his relationship with Brady?

If you like Sci-Fi, you will like this one. The writing is pretty good, and I was really interested to see the "new" Cameron as I knew his four years changed who he was. I also wanted to see how Brady would handle his new feelings as it conflicts with his responsibilities. It was entertaining.

Gay sci-fi romance with a twist? Yes, please! I loved this book; I read it in one sitting and then again, a few days later. I usually don't like books written in the first person POV, but Garrett's dry narration was fantastic and really suited the story. Lisa Henry's writing was brilliant, just as expected after reading The Island.

This book was seriously lacking in plot. Brady’s internalized homophobia and the narrator reading Cam’s dialogue in a flat monotone made me totally uninterested in the couple so I was just here for the aliens. Unfortunately, there’s very little info about the aliens (what’s their physiology, culture, and planet like? What was first contact like? What’s the military’s current strategy?) so this was a bore. Also, the alien
communication via sex
thing was a stupidly unnecessary trauma gimmick

Lisa Henry took my heart with [b:The Island|17153604|The Island|Lisa Henry|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1356112250s/17153604.jpg|18641851]; with [b:Dark Space|17254214|Dark Space|Lisa Henry|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1358359831s/17254214.jpg|22023544] she went to my auto-buy list. Both novels are dealing with some heavy stuff like PTSD, trust issues, and cruelty toward another human being, 'cause Lisa puts her characters through hell before she gives them any hope. Her characters doesn't have diva tantrums, they are not all sunshine and smiles, but that just work for me. If you like dark but emotional, beautifully written m/m, Lisa is your author.
This novel is SciFi romance. I love to read both genres, so it was my first choice from Lisa's backlist. It's focused more on relationship, but SciFi parts are just as amazing.
SpoilerPart when Cameron was in stasis unit and he reaches his hand to Brady is captivating! From that moment you just want to know everything about Cameron Rushton, his past, his present and his future.
. Faceless are aliens who came, conquered and destroyed. And you know what? They are scary. They are just plain terrifying. Nobody knows anything about them, nobody knows what are they're planing to do, nobody knows what they even look like. I was constantly on edge of my seat waiting for their appearing in novel. Unlike [b:The Island|17153604|The Island|Lisa Henry|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1356112250s/17153604.jpg|18641851], this novel is told from first POV. We see distant future, Faceless, and more importantly Cameron, through Brady's eyes. And I think it was great move, it was fun being in his head.
SpoilerI think that first POV was decisive to understand deep connection between him and Cam, because they shared thoughts, dreams and feelings.
. Without Brady's humor this book would be too dark. And you gotta love Brady- he is only 19, but he is having problems that someone of his age shouldn't have ever. And yet, he is light of this novel.:) Cameron Rushton's face is well known to Brady, but just like Faceless he is a mystery. He is a very tortured character,he doesn't belong anywhere and you can tell he is someone who lost hope
SpoilerHe is a true martyr. Him being a hero for Earth was very fitting to his personality.
. Reading about those two falling in love was emotional and engrossing. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
It's not of big importance for me usually, but I have to say that I adore this cover. Model is very beautiful, and his eyes and lips catch your eye among other covers. ::wishing a wallpaper size::

A short scifi romp with violence, homophobia (internalized and otherwise), as well as rape (both as a threat as well as actualized on page.) Also suicidal ideation.

So, this is not a feel good romance book, if that's what you're looking for. There is also a thread of familial love, as well as the overarching bond between the main characters (which is insta-lovey, but with reasoning that makes it less annoying).

I love Henry's writing, and this was a pretty solid story. The reason for four instead of five stars is the fact that while I read this, I mostly felt anxiety and gloom. So while this was a decent book, the reading experience was pretty unpleasant for me, personally.

Not a book I would have chosen easily, but it didn't disappoint. The story developed a bit different than I expected after reading the description and seeing the tags. Yes, sex was a way of communicating and wielding power, but it wasn't the main focus.
I really liked the connection between Brady and Cam, it went further than just sharing a heartbeat and one mind. They really understand and complement each other and it has an happy end. They might have lost me a bit at the part where Brady is "saved" and send back to Defender 3 and eventually back to his sister. It felt a bit jumbled, but it couldn't ruin my happy feeling.
