Really enjoyable, and I’m really going to miss this series. A good culmination of the various strands of plot threading through the previous books. Ending was a little rushed, especially as the last book in the series.

The Books of the Raksura have always been a bit pulpy, but this installment careens between four different scenarios populated by 30-40 characters. There's very little character development that can happen when you're juggling that many plot elements, and Wells has always had a weakness for unnecessary logistical interludes. In short, this book has very little of what I enjoy about the series and leans so heavily into my pet peeves that I am retroactively getting annoyed about the series as a whole. I'm sure it's going somewhere cool, but I am no longer on board for the ride.

I would read 100 more Raksura books and I'm so sad this is the end! Pearl/Malachite spin-off when?

The story that was told was not the one I was interested in. There were way more interesting things going on on the sidelines that I expected to eventually take center-stage, but they never did. The half-fell and how everyone was going to deal with them, especially considering their own experience and backgrounds, was way more interesting than yet another race with a boring bureaucrat.

The last 2 books of the series were not bad, but for the best experience one should stop at book 3.

PS: Everyone kept squeezing wrists, made me worried about how bruised those wrists had become by the last chapter. Don't they have other parts to squeeze???
